NASA will announce Dec. 7 that scientists have made a ‘major' discovery on Mars using images acquired by the orbiting Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft.
Imaging scientists Michael Malin and Ken Edgett will present what they describe as their "most significant discovery yet" during the press conference, scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (19:00 GMT) at NASA Headquarters in Washington.
Ken Nealson, director of the Center for Life Detection at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory will speak at the conference. Further details of the findings are to be published in the Dec. 8 issue of the journal Science, but remain under embargo until the time of the press conference.
An international team of scientists has has collected an alien bacterium 10 miles above Earth, plus signatures of other extraterrestrial microbes even higher in the atmosphere that could have originated from outer space, a participant in the study said Friday.
The living bacteria, plucked from an altitude of 10 miles (16 km) or higher by a scientific balloon, could have been deposited in terrestrial airspace by a passing comet, according to the researchers.
The microorganisms are unlike any known on Earth, but the astrobiologists "want to keep the details under wraps until they are absolutely convinced that these are extraterrestrial," said study participant Chandra Wickramasinghe, a noted scientist at Cardiff University in Wales.
NASA's Ames Research Center posted a cautious reaction to the report on its Astrobiology Web site. NASA said the finding is likely to meet considerable skepticism in the scientific community. "Aerobiologists might argue that 10 miles is not too high for Earth life to reside, a possibility that Wickramasinghe appears to accept," the statement said.
However, NASA said, a compelling case can be made for the transport of microorganisms through space aboard comets and meteors.
Recent discoveries indicate that microbes can remain dormant for millions of years and start to reproduce again.
Reuters communicates that IBM claim they just sold a supercomputer to the USAF to identify unidentified flying objects. The calculator will be used by the Space Surveillance Team in Hawaii tu chase objects in space such as old satellites, foreign spacecraft, and "other UFOs".
The system, is part of a $10 million system upgrade, is capable of 480 billion calculations per second, 40 times faster than "Big Blue" and will improve blurry telescopic images of space objects, allowing DOD to indentify the objects.
Note that neither the USAF nor the original IBM annoucement does not refer to unidentified objects in any other meaning than satelite, their debris, and flying object of terrestrial origin. The word "ufo" is added later by news agencies relaying the Reuters information.

An International ufology conference has been organized by the Air autorities of Chili last Thursday, military representatives, schientists and civilian researchers discussed of the possibility of intelligence elsewhere in the cosmos.
General Ricardo BERMUDEZ, chief of the military ufo investigation group declared on national TV that the Chilian Air Command accpets that ufo are not myths but real, and that unidentified flying objects do fly above Chili.
The forum, in Santiago of Chili, made the following statment its conclusion: "Today, it can be correctly said that the ufo pehnomenon exists everywhere in the work and had millions of witensses."
The military representative explained that thousands of testimonies gathered in Chili do correspond to real observations of ufos.
The organisation of the conference is due to the Direction Nationale de l'Aéronautique Chilienne, the official military air command in Chili, and is a significant event that adds a lot to the seriousness of ufo investigations worldwide.

NASA is now officially funding a project to build a device that they say could work as an antigravity machine. "The fact that it had appeared in a credible scientific journal is what really caught our eye." says Ron Koczor, assistant director for science and technology at the Space Science Laboratory. Most scientists are criticizing any anti-gravity research, claiming that Einstein "proved" anti-gravity to be impossible, probably out of simple fear for their careers, they do not want their names associated to borderline research. But this May, a prototype of the device for NASA should be ready for tests. NASA awarded a $600,000 contract last year to Superconductive Components Inc. in Columbus, Ohio to build the device.
During July, NUFORC received reports from several states of peculiar, pulsing red lights suspended in the night sky. They were first seen in Gilbert, AZ on July 12 and 13, where a number of witnesses and UFO investigators succeeded in capturing one on video tape. On July 25, they were again seen in Gilbert, AZ, San Diego, CA and Sturgeon Bay, WI, and were reported on local newscasts. The most recent sightings came again from Gilbert on July 27 and Aug 4. Tom King, a well known UFO investigator in the Phoenix area, made pictures.
Mark Schrope, from space.com, published the information that a new study shows that life can not only survive beneath tons of ice at the dark, near-freezing junctions between glaciers and Earth, but actually thrive there. Researchers say the discovery reinforces the notion that the bottom of the ice cap at Mars' north pole should be a primary target in the search for life. Various astronomical sources confirmed there actually is a large ocean under the icy crust of Jupiter's moon Europe, a fact that was long considered as highly possible. Chances to find extraterrestrial lifeforms on Europa are raising at each new discovery.
Interviewed live on CNN on July 28, George Bush Junior, candidate for presidency of the US promised to tell the truth about ufos. A participant at one convention asked: "Will you at last uncover the truth about ufos?", Bush answered: "Yes! I will". He then pointed his finger at his co-lister Dick Cheney and told: "He knows the truth". Cheney was State Secretary of Defense.
A top BBC executive let slip recently that there has been a D-Notice issued on media reporting of the so-called "Black Triangle" UFOs. [Editor's Note: The term "D-Notice" is applied to matters and subjects considered classified for reasons of national security by Her Majesty's Ministry of Defence.]
The executive, who cannot be named, is the former producer of a very popular BBC science program. He told one of our team that the black triangle "craft," first witnessed by hundreds in the Hudson Valley region of the United States [mid-1980s], then by thousands in Belgium (1989-90) and more in Britain, has been "heavily D-Noticed" by the government. That is the stated reason the BBC will not be reporting on the enigmatic craft, no matter how many witness reports they receive.
According to the former science program producer, the reason the government has seen fit to slap a restrictive notice on reporting of the Triangles is because--so far as the government has secretly informed the BBC--the craft are part of a new secret military project, and as such must be protected under the secrecy laws. If this is the case, however, it surely begs the question: If the so-called Black Triangles are secret military aircraft, then what are they doing hovering over residential areas and frightening people half to death? Something somewhere simply does not add up.
CNI News adds: As noted by Nick Pope in the previous article, it is very unlikely that the "Black Triangle" aircraft can be explained as a secret military project. Its technical capabilities and flight behavior suggest it neither belongs to any earthly government nor falls within the envelope of human technology. Perhaps, then, the British media are actually being warned away from reporting on a fairly obvious example of "alien" craft intruding with impunity into British airspace.
Astronomers have discovered another new Jupiter like planet around the star Epsilon Eridani. It is the closest planet known to the nine in our solar system, at only 10 light years from the Sun. The total number of planets circling other stars is now more than 50. I can already be concluded that planets are common around stars. This planet is quite a 'normal' one, 1.6 masses of Jupiter, and it is very likely other planets are circling Epsilon Eridani. A hacker disrupted service for 36 hours to the Web site that displays detailed satellite images of Area 51, the top-secret Air Force site in Nevada.
Raleigh-based Aerial Images Inc. said the hacker struck six hours after five images of the desert proving ground were loaded Monday night onto the site, www.terraserver.com.
The attack, combined with traffic 10 times what the site usually bears, meant millions of people had difficulty accessing the site or could not connect with it at all, company officials said. Service was disrupted until Thursday.
"I won't tell you it's completely solved,'' said John Hoffman, Aerial Images president. "We've taken steps to mitigate its effect. It's almost a fact of being online these days.'' Hoffman declined to provide details of the attack, citing an ongoing investigation.
The Air Force only recently acknowledged that Groom Dry Lake Air Force Base even exists. Among UFO aficionados, it has long been known simply as Area 51, the base's designation on old Nevada test site maps. They believe that unidentified flying objects from other worlds are hidden there.
The CIA closed the Colorado Project, the last comprehensive government UFO probe, in the late 1960s, after a government panel concluded further extensive study of UFOs probably cannot be justified in the expectation that science will be advanced.
But astronauts Edgar Mitchell and Gordon Cooper say that new investigations are warranted in UFOs: 50 Years of Denial?, a documentary set to air March 3 on The Learning Channel.
"The evidence points to the fact that Roswell was a real incident and that indeed an alien craft did crash and that material was recovered from that crash site," says Mitchell, who became the sixth man on the moon in the Apollo 14 mission.
Mitchell does not say he has seen a UFO. But he says he met with high-ranking military officers who admitted involvement with alien technology and hardware.
Cooper told a U.N. committee recently, "Every day in the U.S.A., our radar instruments capture objects of form and composition unknown to us." In the documentary, Cooper speculates that public skepticism toward UFOs will shift dramatically.
Pictures of flying saucers strike a dramatic image. But documentary filmmaker James Fox says it will take the testimony of credible witnesses like these to change public opinion and force the government's hand.
"As a rule, I steer clear of pictures and video footage of UFOs," he says. "If it's too good, people think it's a fake, and if it's not good people think it's a fake."
