US saucers in the 1954 French Press:

The article below was published in the daily newspaper L'Est Républicain, France, page 5, on October 25, 1954.

At the heart of the mystery of flying saucers

The strange case of the silent fireball

What are these mysterious craft, saucers and flying cigars?

Where do they come from? Why do they come? Everyone begins to ask questions. Did we see similar phenomena in the past? Yes. And even before the plane was created by man. Already, twice, in 1870, witnesses claimed to have seen air ships. A globular object reportedly overflew the Côte-d'Azur. In 1880 on the Pacific Coast, in 1888 in the sky of New-New Zealand, in 1895 over England and Scotland, strange "objects" passed. In 1907, 1910 and 1919, different States report, without paying particular attention, identical "passages".

After World War II, Sweden reported the presence of strange vehicles in the Nordic sky. Men responsible for the transport of wood by flotation report having seen, as they directed their trees in the river flow, an apparatus, accompanied by strange gleams. Then the phenomena appeared in other countries. Every month, at first, every week later, identical facts are reported throughout Europe and even in North Africa. One recalls then that during World War II the Allied pilots repeatedly reported mysterious flying discs that escorted their planes, which they took for a new secret enemy weapon. Then it's America's turn. And if we do not talk about "the operation saucer" before June 1947, an observer pointed out the first demonstration in April 1947. In May there were two others, one in Oklahoma, the other in Colorado. On June 8, 1947, the staff of the Muroc air base sees half a dozen saucers. It was mentioned at the outset only observations made by the day, soon the discs also appeared at night.

Reports of these strange devices are not known to the general public until 1947. The narrative of Kenneth Arnold opens what can be called "the mystery of the flying saucers." From the beginning of the investigation, on which scholars, physicists, engineers and military personal participate, , on can see the main characteristic of these devices: discs or long solid cylinders. None emits the least noise. Whatever the speed, the turns or jumps they perform, they slip into the atmosphere like if no mechanics would animate their maneuvers.
