The Belgium flap:

On November 29, 1989, in the Eupen region:

About 05:30 p.m. from Schoenefeld, "Mr. D.":

SOBEPS indicates that about 05:15 p.m., "Mr. D.", school principal, just parked his car at his home in Schoenefeld (Schönefeld in German), and then saw an object moving slowly in the sky, with powerful headlights, operating at 100 or 150 meters from the ground, but at a distance of about 800 meters.

The shape of the object is unclear, yet he discerns three or four powerful white lights near the periphery and an orange yellow flashing light in the middle.

He was surprised because he did not hear the noise, but he told himself it nevertheless must be a plane, and he went inside his home.

His observation lasted only 2 minutes, but it confirmed other reports, where the trajectory of the object was also parallel to the N68 road.

There is a summary for this observation, published on the web by the Belgian ufologist Godelieve Van Overmeire in her catalog circa 1999, now gone, but much copied by UFO websites and forums. This summary is as follows:

1989, November 29

SCHONEFELD (NE of Nispert)

Mr. G. resides in Schönefeld southeast of Nispert. He returned home at about 05:15 p.m.. He parked his car and then sees in the sky an object that moves slowly, with powerful headlights. It operates at 100 or 150 m above the ground, but at a distance of about 800 m. The shape of the object is unclear. However, the witness discerns three or four powerful white lights near the periphery and a yellow-orange flashing one in the middle. He was surprised because he did not hear any noise. Duration: 2 minutes. Trajectory parallel to the N 68. (VOB 1 - SOBEPS 1991, p. 20)

Source example:

We see that Mrs Overmeire give the witness initial as "Mr. G." instead of "Mr. D.". This is because she mixed initials with those of another sighting she summarized.

Jérôme Beau gave this summary on his ufology website:

05:15pm-05:17pmp In Schönefeld, just southeast of Nispert, M. D., school principal, puts his car at his home when he sees in the sky an object that moves slowly, with powerful headlights. It operates at 100 or 150 m above the ground, but at a distance of about 800 m. The shape of the object is unclear. Mr. G. however, discerns three or four powerful white lights near the periphery and a yellow-orange flashing light in the middle. He was surprised because he did not hear a noise. Telling to himself that it must nevertheless be a plane, he goes home SOBEPS 91.

Luminosity of the sky during this sighting:

 05:10 p.m.
 05:20 p.m.

Localisation:

"Schönefeld" must indeed be just on the east or southeast side of Nispert, there is a "Schönefelderweg" leaving Eupen there, a very long way. The direction in which the witness observed the UFO is said to be the N68 road, currently E421, which joins Eupen and Kettenis. This suggests that this is yet another testimony for the same object; which seems to have been at least seen by seven separate observers or observer groups.

Notes:

The viewing distance is obviously too important for the report to show the unusual aspects reported by witnesses for other reports who were much closer to the UFO.

It should be noted, however, that this witness also said that he had heard no sound, and thought of a plane, which seems to go against the "psychosocial" thesis that people eagerly wanted to see a UFO where there was only a plane or helicopter.

What the closest witnesses considered anomalous, distant witnesses considered more readily to be ordinary. In the case of a collective mistake, it should have been just the opposite: UFO from far away, "explained" when seen up close.
