Until now no attempt has been made to catch the mysterious saucers or to seize these strange visitors. At the beginning of 1948 the desperate pursuit of Captain Mantell was the first experience attempted to obtain specific information. It was in Kentucky, at Fort Knox, that this scene took place. As early as half-past two in the afternoon many Police officers had alerted the military police: a huge object sparkled across the sky at high speed and headed for Gogman Air Force Base.
The base was on alert. In the control tower Colonel Hix, surrounded by his officers, had his binoculars pointed in the indicated direction. It was close to 3 o'clock in the afternoon when suddenly the object came out of the clouds. It was huge, its diameter was assessed at about 170 m. Three fighter planes had already taken to the air trying to reach this enormous saucer. The pilot who lead the small squadron of hunters, Captain Mantell, finally came into contact with the Control Tower: the object was in front of him and he followed it in its wake. What precisions could they already give? The apparatus was enormous, it seemed to be made of metal, it did not go faster than the hunters, and Mantell thought he would catch up with it.
