Lübeck - Two officials believed at first that it was an aircraft crashing. Polizeihauptmeister Achim Kähler (44) and his colleague Dirk Schöning (39) were on night patrol in Luebeck, when they saw a bright light racing across the sky.
What was strange about it was that the fiery object flew on and at such speed that it could not be caught by the chasing police auto.
Was it a light aircraft, or a UFO?
A restaurant worker in Canal Street was astonished when he looked skyward. "I saw red fire", said Salvatore Cairoli.
The object flew apparently controlled towards Travemuende, before it turned off to the right and disappeared.
The operations center immediately made enquiries with the air traffic control in Bremen and with the air base of the German Federal Armed Forces in Jagel about low-altitude flights above Luebeck - nothing! When officials stated that the UFO was in reality a small hot air balloon from a party, which flew 500 meters above the city, nobody in Lübeck believed it: "Our" UFO must have been something much more astounding. LÜBECK – Die beiden Beamten glauben zuerst an einen Flugzeugabsturz. Polizeihauptmeister Achim Kähler (44) und sein Kollege Dirk Schöning (39) sind nachts auf Streifenfahrt durch Lübeck, als sie am Himmel ein helles Etwas vorbeirasen sehen. Doch das Ding, aus dem Flammen schlagen, kommt nicht etwa runter: Es fliegt weiter – und lässt sich von dem hinterherjagenden Polizeiauto nicht einholen. Doch kein Sportflugzeug in Not? Sondern ein UFO?
Auch die Nachtschwärmer in der Kanalstraße staunen beim Blick nach oben nicht schlecht. "Ich sah einen roten Feuerkreis," beschreibt Salvatore Cairoli vom Restaurant "Sea Side." Das Objekt flog anscheinend kontrolliert gen Travemünde, bevor es irgendwann nach rechts abdrehte und verschwand.
Sofort erkundigte sich die Einsatzzentrale bei der Flugsicherung in Bremen und beim Fliegerhorst der Bundeswehr in Jagel nach Tiefflügen über Lübeck – nichts! An die Erklärung von Fachleuten, das UFO sei in Wirklichkeit ein Party-Miniheißluftballon gewesen, der von Trockenbrennstoff betrieben in 500 Metern über der Stadt trieb, mag in Lübeck niemand glauben: "Ihr" UFO muss etwas viel Spannenderes gewesen sein.
