Officer Sights Strange Lights Over Lisbon

LISBON. -- Another "flying object" has made its appearance in the district.

This time it was a glowing disc-like light sighted over Lisbon early today by Police Officer Richard Koffel, who failedto obtain confirmation from sheriff's Deputy Dave Brothers, 10 miles away near Salem.

Koffel said the meteor he saw on the midnight turn several weeks ago didn't compare with what he witnessed at 5:20 a.m. today as he stood in the Eagles Home parking lot.

He said the light was about 60 degrees up the eastern sky and had no distinct outline except for being "round and flat with a little peak at the top." He said it appeared to glow "like those radiation things on TV."

He notified the sheriff's office by radio, asking the night deputy to take a look. When Koffel glanced at the sky again, the light had changed shape to a long shaft - an elongated teardrop. This remained until sunrise, dimming as the sky brightened. [Noctilucent cloud?]

"Look east and tell me what you see," was Koffel's request of Brother. The deputy radioed, "Stars and clouds."

Koffel said there were no clouds here and the sky was full of stars. "The atmosphere was so clear you could see for miles."

The light was much bigger than a full moon and didn't seem to be far away, he said. It did not move although the last visible portion, after it changed shape, was lower in the sky.

The County Jail radio man heard no other reports of the light from this area, but did overhear a conversation near Columbus in which two hunters were so alarmed at a light that they had seen "they were never going back in the woods after dark."
