Summary:

In September 1988, ufologist Joël Mesnard published a catalog of unpublished French cases in the ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit of which he had become the editor.

Among these is a case located in Bouillé-Loretz in the Deux-Sèvres department dated August 1954:

Around 11 p.m., Mr. Léonard was smoking a cigarette at his window, before going to bed. He could see, in front of him, the village church, and on his left, a farm. Between these two buildings, he suddenly saw passing, at a distance he could not assess, "a yellow-orange, incandescent cigar".

The object's trajectory was roughly oriented from south-southwest to north-northeast. It seemed to come from Thouars heading towards Montreuil-Bellay.

The observation lasted about fifteen seconds. Mr. Leonard's wife arrived at the window too late to see the phenomenon.

Explanations:

Obviously, a possible trivial explanation is that it was a meteor.
