The local weekly newspaper Le Semeur, from the Puy-de-Dôme, reported on page 2 on January 17, 1954, that on January 9, 1954 at 9:30 p.m., a meteor had crossed the sky of Clermont-Ferrand, seeming to move at very slow speed, leaving behind a long trail of fire, and that many inhabitants of La Plaine had had time to see it.
It does not seem there was any interpretation of this event as a "saucer" or UFO.

A 09:30 p.m., on Saturday January 9, a meteor crossed the sky of Clermont. It seemed to be moving at very slow speed, leaving behind a long trail of fire. Many inhabitants of La Plaine have had time to see it.
There is currently no particular reason for this meteor sighting to be anything other than that, and I think it was likely a meteor. However, the sighting should be documented here in my opinion, because:
