Kenneth Arnold's sighting

Kenneth Arnold sighting reports in the Press:

The article below was published in the newspaper The Herald and News, Klammath Falls, Oregon, USA, on page 1, on June 28, 1947.

Discs May Be Jet Exhaust

WHITE SANDS, N. M., June 28 (AP) -- Myterious "flying discs" reported seen Wednesday in several widespread western areas may have been the heated circular exhaust pipes of jet airplanes, says Lt. Col. Harold R. Turner, commandant of the White Sands proving ground.

Turner explained that the exhaust pipes, when hot, might give an illusion of discs.

First reports of such objects were received from Pendleton, Ore., where Kenneth Arnold, Bois, Ida., pilot, said he saw nine of them weaving high in the sky over the Cascade mountains, traveling at a tremendous speed.

Similar reports in Washington, Idaho, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
