Mayan-based lore proclaims since decades that on December 21, 2012, the end of the world, or a dramatic but otherwise specified "change" will occur on the Earth. This is supposedly certain because it is supposedly written in "the Mayan calendar".
When a crop circle was found in Silbury Hill in July 2009, crop circles enthusiasts claimed that it was a "Mayan" crop circle, and that it signals the December 21, 2012, "end of the world as we know it".
The prediction was noted in the media, such as on the web page of the British journal The Telegraph:

My prediction:
There will be no "end of the world", no "change of era", nothing of this kind at all on December 21, 2012.
