On October 30, 1957, at 11:50 p.m., the appearance of a luminous machine appreciably above the village of Novy-Chevrières was noted. Adjudant L[-], commanding the brigade of Amagne-Lucquy, accompanied by gendarmes L[-], T[-] and R[-] was in parking on the trunk road N.51 at 100 meters in the North-East of the level crossing of Novy-Chevrières, during a patrol. At 11:50 p.m. exactly, commander as well as the gendarmes had their attention drawn by the presence of a luminous machine having the shape of a cigar which circulated at the horizon, North-South direction. Suddenly, the machine made a left turn towards the east and became motionless above the community of Novy-Chevrières, during 30 to 45 seconds, then it departed again in the south-western direction. According to adjudant L[-] and the gendarmes, the machine which was within approximately 500 meters of them, could be at an altitude of 200 meters. It clearly had the shape of a saucer of a diameter of approximately twice that of the raising sun. Its colour was red garnet. It moved at a very high speed, but no noise was perceptible. It is to note that at this hour, the night was still very dark, the weather was cloudy. Following discrete research carried out this day in the community of Novy-Chevrières, it reveals that Mr. V[-], mayor of the community, saw the luminous machine at a certain distance whereas he went to his cattle sheds at the hour indicated above. Kept busy by the presence of his animals he did not pay any special attention to this appearance. In addition, because of the late hour, it does not seem that the presence of the machine was noticed by other inhabitants or authorities. The section commander which carried out a survey at 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. on the 31rd, personally did not notice anything. It is on his arrival at the station of Novy-Chevrières at midnight and 12 minutes that he was personally informed of the event by the adjudant L[-], who still seemed under amazement caused by the appearance. It is to be noticed that the personnel of the brigade of Rethel, which was in Ambli-Fleury, stated to have seen a red gleam at the same hour in the same direction. But, considering the distance, this personnel could not give any other precision on the nature of this gleam.
