MAY 15, 1971, PASSAPATANZY, WEST VIRGINIA, USA, MICHAEL D:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

NICAP ufologists John Carlson and Bruce Maccabee investigated on sightings in May 1971 in the area of Passapatanzy, east of Fredericksburg, West Virginia. On May 15, 1971, at 10:00 p.m., Michael D., aged 15, was on his way home after camping out with two other boys. His friends had left him for many minutes. While alone, crossing a grassy field which was wet from the rain that had fallen, he saw a bright circular craft slowly approaching at low altitude, passing over some high-tension wires that crossed the field.

Michael crouched down in some tall grass as the object landed, with a bounce, 100 feet away. The object was of silver color and "higher than it was wide", it had a "walkway" that ran around its circumference, and red and white revolving lights on the top. It emitted a humming noise.

A door "came down", out of which emerged a "creature, powerful huge", who was hunched over, had long arms, and wore shiny, light reflecting clothing. The figure was holding a glowing box or sphere in one hand. It walked in a "stiff legged, bouncing" motion, and approached the grass where Michael was hiding; the frightened boy sent his dog on the figure, At some point the boy blacked out. One version indicates that the figure went back in the object; which took off few minutes later, it took off.

Michael's companions returned a short time later and found him still in the grass, moaning and very frightened, acting confused, and his friends helped him get home. The dog was gone, but returned a day or so later. At the site the next day, there were seven holes in the ground, 2.5 inches wide at the top and a foot deep.

Two days later, Michael, his brother and his sister saw a bright disc-shaped object, which had chased his sisters in a car as they drove up the long driveway of their house. That incident comprized car stopping, permanent damage to a radio and effects on a TV, and the police got involved.

[Ref. bm1:] DR. BRUCE MACCABEE:

In September 2006, ufologist Bruce Maccabee reminded of complex cases he investigated in the fall of 1971 as he remembers, which occurred in May 1971. There were two main distinctively different sightings on two days by teenagers in Passapatanzy, West Virginia, east of Fredericksburg.

Michael, the only witness during the first sighting, had reported to have seen a circular craft with a sort of "walkway" around it landing within a hundred feet or so of him. He was stunned and sort of collapsed in the grass of the wet which was wet because it had been raining. Then, a sort of doorway opened and a "creature, powerful huge" - Maccabee notes he would never forget this phrase he used - came out. It was carrying a glowing sphere in its hand.

At this point Michael blacked out. Two friends, who had been with him before the sighting but had walked out of the field many minutes before the sighting, then returned and found him lying in the grass. The dog was gone, but returned a day or so later. Michael was acting confused and his friends helped him get home.

Maccabee recalls that there was another sighting a day or two later by Michael, his brother and sister. It involved car stopping, permanent damage to a radio and effects on a TV, and the police got involved in this sighting.

Maccabee indicates that this case was published in the NICAP bulletin "UFO Investigator" in 1973 or 1974 under the title "The Case of the Virginia Giant."
