The 1930's, Leatherhead, Surrey, U-K., locals:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

A ghost story from a 1967 ghost stories book and later on ghost stories websites, also appears in a "skeptical" ufologist's catalogue.

The alleged story was that in the 1930's, in Leatherhead, at Swan Corner, in U-K., a "lofty phantom of a woman" was seen by several motorists, as she stood in the middle of the road, before "she" disappeared just seconds later.

After the woman appeared right in front of his vehicle, one lorry driver was absolutely convinced that he had run over a real person. He stopped and scoured the area for a corpse; which he could find no trace of.

Some months later, reports about this female apparition had started to change into sightings of a ghostly nurse, who would lay sprawled out in the road. As with the previous ghost account, she too would disappear, just a few seconds after being seen.

Case 3:

Lofty Woman and Ghost of Nurse

Location: Leatherhead - Swan Corner

Type: Apparition

Date : 1930's

Details: A lofty phantom of a woman was seen by several motorists, as she stood in the middle of the road, before 'she' would disappear just seconds later.

After witnessing the apparition appear right in front of his vehicle, one lorry driver was absolutely convinced that he had run over a real person, until he stopped and scoured the area for a corpse - which he could find no trace of.

Some months later, reports about this female apparition had started to change into sightings of a ghostly nurse, who would lay sprawled out in the road.

As with the previous ghost account, she too would disappear, just a few seconds after being seen.

[Ref. ns1:] "SURREY LIVE" WEBSITE:

Leatherhead (1930/1)

A tall phantom woman was seen by several drivers as she stood in the middle of the road. She would vanish a few seconds later. One speeding truck driver was convinced he had hit and killed a real woman, until he stopped and searched the area for a body - there was none. A few months later, this woman was replaced by a ghostly nurse who lay sprawled out in the road. As with the previous phantom, she would disappear a few seconds after being seen.

[Ref. pr1:] PETER ROGERSON:

Late 1930.

LEATHERHEAD (SURREY : ENGLAND)

Local residents reported being stopped by something like a tall woman standing on the road, 200m south of the cross roads known as Swan Corner. The woman would just vanish on the spot. Other people saw the figure of a woman in a nurses’ uniform lying in the road

Points to consider:

My reader may wonder why such a "ghost story" appears in ufology. British "skeptical" ufologist Peter Rogerson used to list these, as well as fairies stories, in his INTCAT ufology catalogue in order to show that human inventions and errors have always existed, and that thus, in his opinions, UFO sighting reports and UFO occupants sighting reports are also invented or the result of imagination and misinterpretations.

Though I do not doubt that misinterpretations and hoaxes have always existed - my catalogue shows this - I do not fell satisfied when this is claimed to be the final answer to the UFO question.

Now, in this case, the data is so poor that I cannot see how one should decide whether this was invented, imagined, or the result of some misinterpretation. I only see that its seems to have no intrinsic connection to UFOs.
