ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Saverne, on March 21, 2015:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2015-03-21-SAVERNE-1

Summary:

On March 26, 2015, "Luce G", a 29-year-old housewife, reported on the ufology forum "Les Mystères des OVNIS" her observation of a "strange light in the sky", of March 21, 2015, from 08:40 p.m. on, in Saverne in the Bas-Rhin.

She says was looking to the south, trying to see the Big Dipper, and saw two stars quite close to each other. One of the two "stars" was moving from north to south and she followed her, and took two pictures "almost overhead".

She said she was "90° from the ground" on her balcony on the first floor, and she rotated of "180°" because the spot was moving slowly northward.

She says that "on two more shots the gutter is on the right, as my house is oriented north-south."

She says "not seeing it on the screen because of the north", she framed "as when zeroing and observing the picture in which it appeared, the bright star formed what you observed in the picture". She thought she would get "a relatively fixed star without effect around."

The light went away more and more, and found itself above the A4 motorway.

The observation lasted one or two minutes under a clear sky of "twilight" kind. She did not report her observation officially and does not report any other witness.

She indicates that the observed phenomenon was silent, the light spots moved in straight line, and reports the presence of a military zone there.

A sighting reports analyst of the forum asked her confirm the north to south path because she contradicted herself about it; he asked whether the object would have performed a U-turn.

He indicates that at that time there, there were neither visible satellites nor airliners in the air.

Unfortunately the witness did not answer his question. She posted the pictures on the forum, they are available below.

Complete observation report:

I looked to the south, I was looking for the bif Diper [sic], I saw two stars quite close to each other, and the sky is very clear, at dusk, one of the two stars advanced from north to south and I followed it, I took two pictures almost above me, I was at 90° from the ground on my balcony on the second floor, I rotate 180 degrees as the spot quietly went towards the north. On the other two images the gutter is on the right, as my house is oriented north-south. Do not see it on the screen because of the north, I framed it like a zeroing and observing the shot that appeared, the bright star formed what you observed in the picture, I thought I had a relatively fixed star, without effect around it. Then the light went away more and more, and ended up above the A4.

Hello LuceG

Something to solve :

@LuceG wrote:

... i pivoted of 180° because the luminous spot quietly moved to the north ...

...

Trajectory: south - north specified

Do you confirm the north --> south trajectory ?

Or did the luminous spot make a U-turn (the two first sentences are in contradiction).

Search for satellites visible at that time : none.

Search for airlines at that time : none.

Weather Saverne on 03/21/2015 08:40 p.m.
Wind from the northwest of 14,8 to 18,5 Km/h

Good afternoon.

Discussion:

Map.

On the second picture, I do see something. But there is no EXIF data; so I do not know if the appearance of three points aligned vertically is real of is the effect of camera shake and long exposure (logical by night).

The witness also seeming surprised by this "effect" she has not seen visually, it is likely that it is a shake effect.

The color looks white, making it unlikely - but not impossible - that it was a Chinese lantern.

For the rest, the story seems a little confused, mostly about the directions, as noted by the web forum analyst.

It also quite without precision. For example, the lady says that by the end of observation, her luminous spot was above the A4 motorway. But the A4 runs from northeast to northwest of Saverne, giving a heading uncertainty of almost 180 degrees...

At 27 km to the east of Saverne, lies the Haguenau airfield, and at as many kilometers to the southeast, lies the Entzheim airport. Although no airliner was in the air at this time and this place, I cannot exclude a small plane or helicopter, certainly quite far as it reportedly emitted no noise.

Another fact: the Swiss association MeteorAstronomie filmed the passage of a meteor that day at 08:40 p.m. from four stations. This meteor was also reported from several places in the Vosges and from Strasbourg.

Evaluation:

Low strangeness, possible plane or helicopter.
