ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. Summary:

On December 29, 2013, a man from Steinbach reported, using the form of the GEIPAN, the French official body in charge of the question of "Unidentified Aerospace Phenomena", his observation of this same date:

He indicated that at around 5:40 a.m., he went to his terrace to smoke a cigarette, and looked at the sky as usual.

He was watching clouds moving in the wind when suddenly he saw a light appear between two clouds. Then the clouds occulted this glow, but 3 seconds later the glow reappeared, and this time he could observe something static and silent which had the shape of a slightly inclined disc very scintillating of light yellow color, during approximately 2 seconds, at 5:45 a.m. exactly.

Then the object again disappeared behind the clouds. He went to get his smartphone to be able to film it, but he waited 15 minutes in vain.

He said he was sure it was neither the moon, nor a star, nor a plane because two minutes after the apparition, he saw a plane flying in the distance, which was moving and blinking.

He indicated that it happened above Cernay, while he lives in the village of Steinbach just next door and a little higher up.

The witness made this reconstitution of what he saw:

In the form, he adds that his terrace is facing south, that the object was in the south, that there was no noise, no halo, no trail, that the object had been static, very scintillating, with a relatively intense light then slightly a diminished light.

He gave an angular size of 150 millimeters at the length of the arm, and an elevation of 20°.

The GEIPAN, who published the file in March 2004, noted that in view of the description of a "light yellow scintillating slightly tilted disc" observed for 2 seconds through a gap in the clouds; in the direction Cernay and Mulhouse to the south east at the approximate azimuth of 125°, while the sky map indicates at 129° azimuth and 9° elevation the presence of the Moon at its last quarter (very tilted crescent), it is very likely that the witness did not recognize the Moon because of the clouds and the brevity of the observation.

The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as "B", as a probable sighting of the Moon, but because of the difference in elevation estimate between the report of the witness (20°) and that of the Moon (9°), they said a slight doubt remains about this explanation.

Summary: STEINBACH (68) 12/29/2013. Observation of the appearance of a glow then of a discoid object in the sky: probable observation of the Moon.
Description:

On December 29, 2013 around 5:45 a.m. a witness on the terrace of his home is intrigued by the presence in the sky of a glow that appears between clouds then a glittering disc. The static object quickly disappears behind the clouds. No other testimony has been reported.

The witness describes a "slightly tilted, light yellow disc", observed for 2 seconds by a gap in the clouds; he indicates a direction of observation "above Cernay, seen from Steinbach direction Mulhouse, thus south": the map shows that the direction Cernay and Mulhouse is in the south East (approximate azimuth: 125 °).

The map of the sky indicates at 129 ° of azimuth and 9 ° of elevation the presence of the Moon, to its last quarter (thin crescent very tilted).

It is very likely that the witness did not recognize the Moon because of the clouds and the brevity of the sighting.

The GEIPAN classifies this case as "B" likely observation of the Moon. Because of the difference in elevation estimation between the report of the witness (20°) and that of the Moon (9°), there remains a slight doubt about the hypothesis presented.

. . . We are on 12/29/2013, it is around 5:40 (in the morning) when I go to my terrace to smoke a cigarette. As usual I look at the sky. I was watching clouds move with the wind when suddenly I saw a light appear between two clouds. Then the clouds occulted this light but 3 seconds after the light reappeared, and this time I could observe something static and silent which had the shape of a slightly tilted disc very scintillating light yellow color during approximately 2 seconds at 5:45 exactly. Then the object disappeared behind the clouds again. I went to get my Smartphone to be able to film but I waited 15 minutes in vain. I am sure it was neither the moon, nor a star, nor a plane because two minutes after the apparition, I saw a plane flying in the distance, which was moving and blinking. It happened above Cernay, a small town in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace (France). I live in the nearby village of Steinbach, which is a little high up.

Reconstruction of your observation

In order for us to reconstruct the "movie" of your observation, we must have as much information as possible. Concretely, this implies that we understand everything, from the beginning to the end of your observation, and that we know the direction of movement of the phenomenon as well as its altitude. This step is crucial.

We offer three complementary methods:

  1. Take a photo of the environment as it was during the phenomenon, as if the camera were your eyes during the observation. Feel free to draw what you observed directly on the photos.
  2. Make one or more sketches of your observation (see next page) from your point of view, including the environment. Give as many elements as possible to allow us a good understanding of the scene. You are completely free of the sketches you send us. But color accuracy is important, especially if the level of contrast between the observed phenomenon and the environment is low. Try to be as precise as possible, even if it means writing on the sketch. No drawing skills required. The main thing is to let us understand what you saw schematically. You can use the following page for this purpose.
  3. Reconstruct your observation on one or more shots. If you can, present your observation with a top view. For this you can print a map of your place of observation on Google Map (http://maps.google.fr) or Geoportail (http://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/accueil) and report your different positions and observation directions there.

How do I "caption" a photo or map with comments?

If you are used to using drawing or image editing software (Photoshop, GIMP, Illustrator, etc.), we advise you to use these tools, then to send a file in jpg, png or pdf format.

If you cannot access this type of material, print a map of the location and/or a photo, draw over it and attach it to the paper file; or scan or photograph the result and send it to us in jpg, png or pdf format.

I think it was a UFO, because it did not have the usual appearance, shape and size for a star in the sky or an airplane.

From Steinbach, the Cernay direction is southeast, but can only be considered approximately given the extent of Cernay: between 110 and 150 degrees.

As indicated by GEIPAM, the Moon was at azimuth 128° and elevation 8° 23'. This explanation is indeed probable for me as well.
