ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Krautergersheim, on October 17, 2013:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2013-10-17-KRAUTERGERSHEIM-1

Summary:

On a ufology web forum where participants bother to evaluate the reports they get in a generally serious manner, a 57-year-old man from Krautergersheim, in the Bas-Rhin, who is interested in UFOs, filed his story the day after his observation of October 17, 2013, at or about 10:30 p.m.

Walking his dog in Krautergersheim by a clear night, he heard the sound of an airliner and looked up to see just overhead the airliner going in the direction from Obernai to the Entzheim Airport.

He saw the lights of the plane well, it was the night. He heard the sound of aircraft engines. It flew quite high without seeming to prepare to land at the Entzheim Airport.

Next to this plane, he saw a bright object fly at the same speed and in the same direction as the airliner, "an inch" away of the airliner. This object was of brightness of stars and white like stars, and the size a similar to the size of the airliner. Then, the object became very bright as if someone had progressively operated a dimmer. Then its luminosity gradually diminished, and he lost sight of both the object and the airliner.

The witness gave his precise position, he was at the square near the rue du Stade and went to the rue des Peupliers. The object was visible between the end of the hedge and the first house, as if the object and the airliner had followed the rue du Stade towards the industrial area of Krautergersheim.

The sighting lasted between 30 seconds and 1 minute. There was no noise coming from the object, he only heard the plane. He did not report to the police.

A participant of the forum using the "Stellarium" software showed that the NOAA 16 satellite passed just there at 10:20 p.m. and in the direction indicated. He explained that this type of satellite's reflective panel can cause the increase and decrease in brightness observed by the witness, who had no objection to this explanation and thanked for the quality of the research.

Hello and welcome LL56 fhd A little bit earlier (10:20 p.m. according to the Stellarium software) the NOAA16 satellite passed by, it is equipped of reflective pannels hence the very luminous iridium flash that you saw, its movement axis is S-SE /N-NW matches more or less your observation, it is possible that it was this satellite. Other possibilities will be studied...

A little video to better understand...

Hello

The hypothesis by Polyhèdre is interesting, I wanted to dig in and do a search on calsky and heavens above [sky map software] and I cannot find the satellite given by Stellarium (NOAA16) ...? In parallel I searched on flightradar a flight Obernai-Enzheim on a large range around 10:30 p.m. on 10/17 without success.

If there's any volunteer...

I confirm, it is indeed NOAA16, it remained visible for nearly four minutes (10:20 p.m. to 10:24 p.m.) ending its run to the north, upstream, it was invisible because it was still in the Earth's shade.

Regarding air traffic Casperflights reports to us two aircraft that overflown the area on October 17 at 10:30 p.m. exactly (see screen shot below) ...

All the testimonies are taken into account in the forum, regardless of the years, however there is a requirement for them to be retained, complete narrative, precise geographical localization and a complete date, time or time slot as possible for the purposes of any investigation, if the case is sufficiently strange (or striking) to deserve attention, thus becoming public (on the web), it is likely that another witness may come forward and provide more information, it is a matter of time, good will and circumstances...

Discussion:

Map.

I think all the useful things have been well said by the commentators on the ufology forum!

The North-American NOAA 16 satellite was launched by a Titan 2 rocket on September 21, 2000, from Vandenberg Air Force Base. It is a weather satellite put into orbit by the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).

It operates in am heliosynchronous orbit at an altitude of about 850 km, it is equipped with sensors that measure various radiations emitted by the Earth and radiationsfrom the sun reflected by the surface of oceans and continents. This data is used for meteorology, oceanography, glaciology, and the study of the vegetation.

It is its large solar panel that causes highly visible reflections sometimes seen from the ground. Ufologists speak in such cases of an "iridium flash" because the first cases of satellite reflections causing report with a UFO context were those caused by the Iridium satellite network started by Motorola corp. for mobile phone communication in 1998.

Ufologists (well, some ufologists ) use orbitography software, many of which are completely free to use, to determine whether a satellite could be implicated in this type of observations. We find for example:

Evaluation:

Probable satellite flash.
