ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Fegersheim, on August 20, 2008:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2008-08-20-FEGERSHEIM-1

Summary:

On the website of the Alsatian ufology association SPICA, an account of sightings in Fegersheim appeared in 2008, indicated as having taken place 2 years in a row (probably 2007 and 2008) and each time around the 20th of August, from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. and for 30 to 40 minutes.

A man or young man and his companion had observed "strange phenomena in the sky just above us"; which they describe as follows:

"several circles of pale white light of quite big size that go in all directions at random, sometimes stop and then resume a kind of bizarre ballet. The most shocking occurred this year: three circles are superimposed and there was a kind of huge lightning that has invaded the whole horizon and lasted one second. The circles disappear after a while, but often appear behind the clouds but may reveal at daylight. The moon is not always there. In any case, everything happens silently. We did lots of research, asked a lot of advice but we still do not know precisely what it is ???"

The witness specified that the sky was "cloudy but not rainy and not stormy."

In their list of observations in Alsace published around 2015, the SPICA noted as an explanation for this case: "Artificial light reflection (projector)."

Title: Strange lights in Alsace

Message: My girlfriend and I observed two years in a row on the same period strange phenomena in the sky just above here. Here is the description of the phenomenon:

Date: always about August 20th.

Location: Fegersheim, 13 km south of Strasbourg

Weather: cloudy but not rainy and not stormy

Time: from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. and for 30 to 40 minutes.

Description: several circles of pale white light of quite big size that go in all directions at random, sometimes stop and then resume a kind of bizarre ballet. The most shocking occurred this year: three circles are superimposed and there was a kind of huge lightning that has invaded the whole horizon and lasted one second. The circles disappear after a while, but often appear behind the clouds but may reveal at daylight. The moon is not always there. In any case, everything happens silently. We did lots of research, asked a lot of advice but we still do not know precisely what it is ???

Thank you to inform us !!

Discussion:

Map.

I totally agree with SPICA's assessment in [spa4]; the description is totally typical of cloud layer illumination from nightclub projectors.

1.5 km from the center of the village of Fegersheim, towards the North-East, there is an establishment called "Le PHENIX", which is a restaurant and not a nightclub in 2022, but was very well able to organize entertainment with projectors.

Evaluation:

Probable discotheque projectors.
