Summary:

The regional newspaper Le Courrier de Saône-et-Loire for October 22, 1954, reported that in Etrigny, among other places, "some honest housewives going about their usual chores believed they saw strange objects in the sky", "sorts of contraptions that, like meteors, appeared and disappeared in a flash."

The newspaper added that one "is speculating endlessly about what these appearances could mean, and some do not hesitate to call them visions."

About the flying saucers

"Flying saucers" are the topic of the day. It's quite rare to see two people meet without talking about them.

They are seen in all shapes: cigars, chamber pots, bells, melons, etc... Everyone tries to come up with a new shape, unlike anything previously seen.

In Nanton, and in Etrigny as well, honest housewives going about their usual chores believed they saw strange objects in the sky, kinds of spinning tops that, like meteors, appeared and disappeared in the blink of an eye.

One is speculating endlessly about what these appearances could mean, and some do not hesitate to call them visions.

They say that in Balleure, a wagon axle was seen flying, which, after a short journey around the area, returned to land at its point of origin. Fortunately, no one was underneath to catch it on their head...

Explanations:

Map.

Etrigny is 3 km South of Nanton.

"Affuteau" is not in the standard French dictionary, but it is almost certainly a regional term for a "knife sharpener," a long, thin object with a handle.

The report is extremely vague: no date, no time, no duration, and it is impossible to know whether the plural for "objects" means one was seen in two places or several in each location.

I can only suggest that there is nothing to rule out the possibility that this was a meteor passage, like the one on October 16, 1954.

The newspaper does say: "like meteors".
