Summary:

In the late 1950s, a French archivist, Guy Quincy, compiled a catalog of sightings of unidentified flying objects. He noted there, without further details or source, that in the beginning of October 1954, there was a sighting in Bayonne.

In 1979, in their book "La Grande Peur Martienne" ("The Great Martian Scare"), the "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker, intending to give examples showing that the shapes of flying objects reported in France in 1954 were ridiculous, gave as an example a story they said was from newspaper La Nouvelle République for October 11, 1954.

According to them, it was reported that a motorist of Bayonne, Mr. Louis Saint André, reportedly has a "cylinder" with him for 4 kilometers, after which it twisted into a question mark and volatilized.

Without trying to understand, Barthel Brucker said that this is a case of "boundless imagination."

[Ref. bbr1:] GERARD BARTHEL AND JACQUES BRUCKER:

The authors intend to show by examples that the shapes of the flying objects reported in France in 1954 were ridiculous, and give in example a story said to have been published in La Nouvelle République for October 11, about a motorist from Bayonne, and saying:

"A 'cylinder' held company during 4 kilometers to a motorist, Mr Louis Saint André, after that it twisted in the shape of question mark and volitilized."

The authors comment that "imagination has no limits."
