Summary:

According to the ufologists Jean-Charles Azzopardi, then Fernand Lagarde, citing the newspaper L'Est Républicain for October 9-10, 1954, the following observation occurred on the plateof Malaincourt-Chennevières on October 7, 1954:

Around 10 o'clock, Miss CA, 17, of Chennevières-sur-Marne, was busy keeping her cows on this plate when she saw in the sky a yellow disc, rather pale, which seemed to oscillate a few moments.

She gave up her flock a few seconds to run to warn Mr. Malingrey of Baviolles who plowed not far from there, in a place called "Le Boucher."

The luminous phenomenon was still there, and two other people from Chennevières saw this globe flooding all the sky with blue and purple reflections, towards Maix-aux-Forges. This light show lasted a good 5 minutes.

Mr. Malingrey said, "I could not look, it hurt my head, I could see everything blue, my hair was blue, the woods were blue."

The glow then disappeared and abundant rain fell throughout the day.

Plate of Malaincourt-Chennevières (55) October 7, 1954, at about 10:00 a.m.

On Thursday, October 7, at about 10, Miss C.A., aged 17, of Chennevièrres [sic], was occupied keeping her cows on the mesa of Malaincourt when she sees a yellow disc in the sky, rather pale, which seemed to oscillate for some time. Abandonning the heard for a while, she ran to warn Mr. Malingrey of Baviolles, who was plowing not far from there, at the locality "The Butcher". The luminous phenomenon was still there, and two other people of Chennevièrres [sic] saw this sphere flood all the sky with blue and purple reflections, in the direction of Maix-aux-Forges. This display of lights lasted a good five minutes.

"I couldn't look at it any more, claims Mr. Malingrey, it gave me headache. I saw everything in blue, my hair were blue, the woods were blue."

This at the very least unusual gleam disappeared, making place afterwards, alas, to an abundant rain which lasted all the day.

Luc Chastan indicates that in the Meuse in Chanteraine on October 7, 1954, at 10:00 hours, "A girl is busy keeping the cows on the plate of Malaincourt not far from Chennevières, when suddenly she observes a yellow disc, rather pale which seems to oscillate a few seconds. She runs to warn a man who was plowing at the location called "Le boucher" who also observes the phenomenon. The latter floods blue and purple reflections in all the sky in the direction of Maix aux Forges. The second witness speaks about it in these words: 'I could not look at it any more, it gave me a headache. I saw everything in blue, my hair were blue, the woods were blue.' Two other witnesses in Chennevières also observe the phenomenon. The play of light lasts 5 minutes before stopping and leaving room to an abundant rain which lasted the rest of the day."

Luc Chastan indicates that the source is "Lumières dans la Nuit numéro 259/260".

[Ref. lcn2:] LUC CHASTAN:

Luc Chastan indicates that in the Marne in St Quentin le Verge on October 7, 1954, at 10:00 hours, "a 14-year-old girl was busy keeping her cows on the plate of Malaincourt when she sees a yellow disc in the sky, rather pale, which seemed to oscillate a few moments. Giving up her herd, she ran to warn a farmer, who plowed not far from there, at the locality "Le Boucher". The luminous phenomenon was still there, and two other people of Chennevièrres saw this sphere to flood all the sky with blue and purple reflections, In direction of Maix-aux-forges. This set of lights lasted five good minutes. 'I could not look at it any more, the farmer claims, it gave me a headache. I saw everything in blue, my hair were blue, the woods were blue.' This at the very least unusual gleam disappeared then making place, alas, to an abundant rain which lasted all the day."

Luc Chastan indicates that the source is "Lumières dans la Nuit".

Explanations:

Map.

As it had then reained all day, I can assume that the sky was already well covered by clouds.

The glow could have been a meteor passing over the cloud layer; there is however the problem of the duration of 5 minutes, if this information was reliable.
