A summary of an observation in Mauperthuis was published in Radar magazine on October 17, 1954, stating that Mr. Bénard, a builder-contractor at Mauperthuis, was preparing to close his workplace when his wife Georgette and their neighbor, Thérèse Pannetier, called saying that there is "a red ball in the sky, coming from the East!" It "disappears 4' later".
Ufologist Aimé Michel, in 1958, cited Mr. Bénard among the witnesses, which is not sure, gave the date as October 2, 1954, and said that what was seen was a red disk that crossed the sky following the horizon from east to west.

Bénard, Mason-entrepreneur in Mauperthuis close to Coulommiers, is on the point of closing his construction site. Suddenly his wife Georgette and their neighbor, Thérèse Pannetier, call him: "A red ball in the sky, coming from the East!" It disappears 4' later.

In this ufology bulletin, Alain Barbe published a map with cases (but not all the 61 cases or more) for October 2, 1954, including that of Mauperthuis, which he, like Aimé Michel did, thooght to often be "aligned" beyond mere chance:

Luc Chastan indicates in his database that in the Seine-et-Marne in Mauperthuis on October 2, 1954, at an unknown hour, three witnesses see "a red disc crossing the sky while following the horizon from East to west."
The source is indicated as "M.O.C. by Michel Aimé ** Arthaud 1958".

The case is poorly documented since there is no precise hour, no date confirmation in a contemporary documentation, a very meager description with a "ball" for Radar and a "disc" for Aimé Michel.
So, it is impossible for me to know whether this was an extraterrestrial craft, an airplane, or a meteor, for example.
