The two French ufologists Michel Figuet and Jean-Louis Ruchon reported in their 1979 book a case that they say came from La Gazette Française for October 16, 1954:
On October 10, 1954, at 06:15, Michel Toutain was riding a bicycle from Marville-Moutier to Blanville (actually Blainville) in the Eure-et-Loir department, when he had the impression that his bike was no longer advancing, although he tried to pedal hard so that he could leave.
So he got off the bike, turned his bike over and checked the gear, which showed no problem. He got back on his bike but it was impossible for him to advance.
At this moment, his attention was attracted by a luminous object on his right at a distance of 500 meters. It was shaped like a red ball and a greenish part resembling a "washer lid" was above the ball, 4 meters higher.
Between this greenish "cover" and the red ball, there were four silhouettes, and a luminous spot that changed color when the whole started to move. At the moment of a sudden change of direction, the light became green then pink during a horizontal movement, and it became white, then blue when the object gained altitude.
When it left far from sight, it looked like a luminous ball splitting into two parts.
The observation had lasted a quarter of an hour, and during all this time, the witness was trying to cycle forward, only managing to cross two hundred meters.
Another witness, Mr. Josse, who was passing in his truck near a small wood, saw this luminous ball move away, at the end of the observation.
Just before, also in 1979, the two "skeptical" ufologists Gérard Barthel and Jacques Brucker gave a short version of the alleged incident, giving the same source, and explained that the "mayor of the country", friend of the Mr. Toutain, had advised them to "drop" the case, that there was "nothing serious in it, the witness was a big joker and in addition, always between two glasses."

It is near a locality of the Eure et Loir, Marville Moutier Brûlé (3), that Monsieur Michel Toutain claims to have observed an unidentified phenomenon which had for effect to immobilize his bicycle! In the thickness of the craft, he believed he distinguished four silhouettes. At the time of its disappearance, the object split in two parts. That was on October 10 at about 6:15.

3. "La Gazette Française", for October 16, 1954.

The two French ufologists report in their book that on October 10, 1954, at 06:15, Michel Toutain was riding his bicycle from Marville-Moutier to Blanville in the Département of Eure-et-Loir, when he felt that his bicycle did not advance anymore, although he tried to pedal with strength to set the bicycle in motion again.
His efforts being useless, he put foot on the ground, turned his bicycle upside down and checked the mechanism, which did not show any problem. He tried again to ride his bicycle but he still found it was impossible to advance.
At this time, his attention was drawn to a luminous object which wass on his right at a distance of 500 meters. The object has the shape of a red ball and a greenish part resembling the "lid of a boiler" was above the ball, 4 meters higher.
Between this greenish "lid" and the red ball, were four silhouettes, and a luminous dot which changed color when the whole started to move. At the time of a sudden change of direction, the light became green, then it became pink during a horizontal displacement, and became white, then blue when the object took altitude. When it disappeared from view, it seemed to be a luminous ball splitting in two parts.
The observation lasted a quarter of an hour, and during all this time Michel Toutain tried to advance on his bicycle while succeeding progressing only two hundred meters.
Another witness, Mr. Josse, who passed with his truck at the level of a small wood, saw this luminous ball departing at the end of the observation.
The authors indicate that the source is "La Gazette Française" for 10/16/1954.

Jean Sider indicates that on October 10, 1954, Mr. Michel Toutain of Marville-Moutier-Brûlé in the department of Eure-et-Loir "saw his bicycle 'refusing' to advance, apparently immobilized by an odd luminous object!"
The witness put foot at ground when his bicycle refused to advance, he ensured of the correct operation of the shifting track, went up on the saddle but the bicycle had the same problem. He then noticed at approximately 500 meters a luminous object in the shape of a red ball surmounted by a "greenish boiler lid". He wanted to make a half-turn to alert people in Blanville but only succeeded to go 200 meters in a quarter of an hour.

Godelieve van Overmeire indicated that in 1954, on October 10, in France, in Marville-Moutier-Brule, "At 6:15 Michel Toutain rides by bicycle towards Blanville, when his machine seems struck of inertia, in spite of the efforts of its owner. Intrigued, he puts foot at ground. He turns his bicycle over, checks the shifting track, goes up on the saddle: impossible to advance. Within 500m from there on the right, a luminous object then catches his attention. It is a red ball with, at 4 m above this one a greenish part resembling a boiler's lid. Between this cockpit which shelters four silhouettes, a luminous point changes color in connection with the movements that this unit is then starting to do. During a sudden change of direction it becomes green, then pink during a horizontal displacement, and disappears by taking altitude while becoming blue. During all this time, a quarter of an hour approximately, the witness always struggles with the bicycle, which crosses only 200m. At the time of the disappearance of the object, a luminous ball split in two parts. Mr. Josse, who passed by with his truck at the height of the small wood saw the final phase of this observation."

The latter, intrigued, puts foot at ground. He turns his bicycle over, ensured of the correct operation of the shifting track, then goes up on the saddle... to run up once again against the same phenomenon of immobilism. His attention is then drawn on his right by an odd luminous object being at a distance of 500 meters. The phenomenon is composed of a red ball with, above, a greenish part resembling a boiler's lid. Between this cockpit, which shelters four silhouettes, a luminous dot changes color, in connection with various movements which this apparatus is then carrying out. During a sudden change of direction the gleam becomes green, then while moving horizontally, it takes a rosy color, finally, the craft disappears by taking altitude. The gleam, at this precise time becomes blue. During the few minutes of observation which seem to him rather long, the witness always struggles with his bicycle, trying to reach Blanville, three kilometers in the north, in order to alert other people. But unfortunately, despite all his efforts, he rides only a distance of 200 meters in a quarter of an hour. At the time of the disappearance of the object, a luminous ball divided into two parts the witness sweeps his eyes with a handkerchief in order to better realize. He does not specify if the headlight of its bicycle were lit and if it stopped functioning. Another witness who passed by, at the steering wheel of his truck, at the height of the little wood located a little further than the cemetery, hidden by the latter, is said to have seen only the final phase of this phenomenon."

Michel Toutain made his way to Blanville by bicycle, when suddenly his bicycle seemed struck with inertia, no longer advancing despite the efforts of its owner.
Intrigued, he dismounted, turned his bike over, made sure the mechanism was functioning properly, and then climbed back onto the saddle to note once again the same phenomenon of immobility.
His attention was then drawn to his right by a bizarre luminous object at a distance of 500 meters. It was a red ball with a greenish part on the top resembling a washing machine lid. Between the top and the inside that housed four silhouettes, a luminous spot changed color in connection with various movements that the apparatus had then begun to perform.
During a sudden change in direction, the glow became green, then moving horizontally, it took on a pink hue, and finally the machine disappeared while climbing. The glow at that precise moment became blue.
During the few minutes of observation that seemed to him quite long, the witness was still struggling with his bike, trying to reach Blanville three kilometers north, to alert others. Unfortunately, despite all his efforts, he had traveled only 200 meters in a quarter of an hour.
At the time of the disappearance of the object, a luminous ball split in two parts. Mr. Toutain wiped his eyes with a handkerchief in order to better see. He did not say if the headlight on his bicycle was on and if it stopped functioning.
A truck driver, Mr. Dosse [named Josse at another place by Julien Gonzalez] who was driving his truck at the level of the little wood located a little farther than the cemetery masked by it, saw only the last part of this phenomenon.

Michel Toutain was cycling from Marville to Blainville when he found that peddle as he might his cycle would not go any further forward. He checked but could nothing wrong with the cycle but still found that he could not move it forward. He then saw, about 500m away to his right, a luminous red sphere and 4m above that a sort of green plate shaped thing. Between them were four silhouettes and a rotating light, which changed colour as the thing moved, sometimes green, sometimes pink, then white and blue. It seems to resemble a sphere separating into two parts. During the whole 15 minute observation Michel was only able to move forward 200m. A truck driver on a rise, Mr Josse that the thing leaving in the form of a luminous sphere.

This time it was the turn of two other witnesses, Mr. Toutain and Mr. Josse roadmender, to confirm the presence of strange machines on the French soil. Indeed, around 06:15, while Monsieur Toutain was heading towards Blanville on his bicycle, his bicycle found itself struck by a curious inertia, refusing to move forward despite great efforts. Intrigued, not to say amazed, Monsieur Toutain dismounted, turned his bike around to make sure it was working properly, then got back on the saddle! But again impossible to move forward!
He saw a strange phenomenon which he described as a red ball with, above, a greenish part resembling a washing basin lid. He saw four silhouettes in the cockpit and a luminous dot changing color in connection with various movements that this apparatus began to carry out. During a sudden change of direction the glow turned green, then moved horizontally, it took on a pinkish hue. Finally, the craft disappeared while gaining altitude. The glow, at this precise moment, turned blue. During the few minutes of observation which seemed very long to him, the witness was still struggling with his bicycle, trying to reach Blanville, three kilometers to the north in order to alert other people. Unfortunately, despite all his efforts, he only covered a distance of 200 meters in a quarter of an hour. When the object disappeared, a luminous ball split into two parts. The witness wiped his eyes with a handkerchief to better understand. He did not specify whether the headlight of his bicycle was on or whether it had stopped working. The second witness who passed at the wheel of his truck at the height of the small wood located a little further than the cemetery would have seen only the final phase of this phenomenon.

I find it not very likely that one can distinguish silhouettes at 500 meters.
It is not "Blanville" but Blainville. From Figuet and Ruchon on, everyone copied the mistake and nobody thought to check this. Peter Rogerson [prn1] obviously copied my correction.
Blainville is about 2 km approximately North of Marville-Moutier-Brûlé.
I found nothing about "La Gazette Française". There was a "Gazette de France" founded in 1631 but probably unrelated to this story.
