Note: it is not in my intention here to document this case, which became perhaps one of the most publicized cases at least for French ufologists, probably because of the implication of an official service.
"Skeptical" ufologist Eric Maillot wrote about this trace [cz1]:
"It does not have the shape of a circle, but of two arcs (to say "arcs of circle" would already be an extrapolation) on all the known photographs, among which those published by the SEPRA (in color or in infra-red)!"
and [cz1]:
"In fact, there is no circle so there is no diameter..."
"Cela rappelle peut-être trop les particules laissées par un ripage de pneu. D'autant que des traces de roues sont visibles sur la photo inserée! This reminds maybe too much of the particles left by a shifting of a tire. More to the point, since traces of wheels are visible on the inserted photograph!"
and [cz1]:
"Trans is a myth or a tale which is deformable as one wishes, according to the needs of the moment vis-a-vis curious and noninformed readers. One can even say here, disinformed readers..."
In another article [cz2], Eric Maillot wrote:
"A revealing example: not one ufologist, not even one of the scientists or experts, J.Jacques Vélasco of the Service of Expertise on the Atmospheric Phenomena of Re-entries (SEPRA/CNES) to Jacques Vallée, does describe the aspect of the trace such as it really is! Not even the drawing carried out by the gendarmes (2) on the site is realistic. One will read "two concentric circles" here, "two arcs" there, but you never heard about a beautiful straight inprint, intimately related to the trace."
"Elément structurel, aussi net que dérangeant, visible sur toutes les photos détaillées publiées, de la revue "Lumières dans la nuit (3)" de l'époque à la récente plaquette publicitaire du très officiel SEPRA/CNES de 1992 (4). "In the absence of assistance of the SEPRA, a small experiment with my car was going to confirm to myself many common points with the microscopic visual aspect described in the TEchnical Note 16. By making a skid by braking (or a starting with ice-skating of the wheels) on a ground of argile-limestone, one notes a polishing, an abrasion of the gravels, fine ferrous striations of metallic lustre and a small granulous black deposit left by the tires on the grains of rock which, examined with a binocular microscope, are identical to those shown in the photographs of the GEPAN (p.36, NT16)."
All that seems to indicate that the trace of Trans-in-Provence is not a circle nor of the parts of circles left by a round object but traces of tires of a car or some similar vehicle.
My problem is as follows.
The photographs shown here and there including in the technical note by GEPAN seem indeed not to show a circle, but vague traces which could be portions of circle or not.

I would like to hear something about this second photograph, which does not seem to me to show anything else than a complete circular mark which does not appear to me to be possibly the result from tire tracks of a braking car or another similar vehicle.
Que s'est-il passé? Pourquoi ne montre-t-on pas cette photographie là? La trace a-t-elle été altérée? Les images montrant la trace qui n'est plus un cercle complet sont-elles tout simplement des images postérieures de la trace entretemps piétinée et altérée?
Si je me réfère aux sources pour les images qui semblent ne pas montrer un cercle complet mais une trace bien moins nette, je constate que ces images là sont datées de bien plus tard. Par exemple, celle-ci, de mauvaise qualité, est intégrée dans la version électronique du rapport du GEPAN sur ce cas [nt16], et indique bien que l'image date de 39 jours plus tard:

Le rapport de la Brigade de Gendarmerie ayant examiné les traces le 9 janvier 1981 indique [nt16]:
"Nous constatons la présence de deux cercles concentriques l'un de 2, 20 m de diamètre, l'autre de 2, 40 m de diamètre. Les deux cercles laissent apparaître une couronne de 10 centimètres d'épaisseur. Sur cette couronne, sont nettement visibles deux parties diamétralement opposées de 0,80 m environ.., et. qui présentent des striés noires semblables à des traces de ripage..." |
10 centimètres d'épaisseur, et 20 centimètres de largeur...

Pourquoi faudrait-il traiter d'images datant de quelque 40 jours après les faits quand par ailleurs, des images plus intéressantes existent, datant du lendemain des faits?
Que vaut réellement l'argumentation basée sur la présence de traces de pas ou de pneus autour de la trace, et d'une forme incomplète du cercle qui ne serait pas un cercle et n'aurait donc pas de diamètre, quand la photo du lendemain montre bien un cercle, bien marqué, complet et ayant un diamètre, une largeur et une épaisseur?
