VALENCE, France, Jan. 8 (AP) -- A French couple said Saturday that an oval-shaped unidentified flying object resembling "a big growing star" chased their automobile near this southeastern French town, landed in a field, then took off again "in a flash."
Mr. and Mrs. François Perez told police the incident occurred on the evening of Jan. 1, and that at first they thought they were being followed by a helicopter.
Trying to find out more about the object, the couple said they drove back along the same road an hour later, and suddenly spotted the craft parked in a field 400 yards from their car.
Perez said it was about 30 to 40 yards in diameter and "surrounded by a halo of white light." He said 10 minutes later the vehicle's lights began flashing and the craft zoomed off at a 45-degree angle.
Both Perez and his wife said their eyes hurt them for the next 48 hours, and the husband said his wristwatch has not worked since the episode.
