(By Guy Baillargeon). -- Flying saucers definitely have a thing for the Quebec City area. Charlesbourg resident Mr. Jean-Claude Bergeron, of 546 80th Street, reported to us this morning that he had witnessed an unusual phenomenon around 9:45 yesterday evening while he was traveling south-north on Route 54, not far from the Roland Motel, near Stoneham.
Still quite shaken up, Mr. Bergeron told us that he had seen an object that gave off a dazzling light about 1200 to 1500 feet in the air.
According to our informant, the craft was moving slowly toward Chicoutimi about 1000 feet from the road. He thought he saw a dome above the saucer, but couldn't make it out very well because of the strong glow coming from below the saucer.
The fiery red light was so strong, Mr. Bergeron said, that he could easily make out the outlines of the nearby mountains surrounding it. The trucker tried to follow the object by accelerating, but the object disappeared at a high speed. He believes the saucer was visible for about 30 seconds.
"I got my truck up to 85 miles an hour," he said, "but the balloon-shaped object disappeared, leaving white smoke behind."
Mr. Bergeron said that where he saw the saucer, the road is very straight and there are no houses. He described the object as a large child's balloon but was unable to determine the dimensions of the saucer.
