1930, Amazonas, Brazil, a man:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

The Belgian "skeptic" ufologist Godelieve van Overmeire said that in 1930 in Urubu, Brazil, a member of a team of 10 people in the jungle was separated from the others, and as night fell, he climbed in a big tree. He suddenly heard a loud cry that sounded human to him. He heard someone approaching and loaded his rifle, and saw in the dim light at 40 meters a tall black humanoid figure who grumbled. The man fired on this creature who fled to the thickets grunting and moaning, while the man in the tree fired again. At dawn, he found blood in the broken coppice and there was an acid stench. Van Ovemeire cites a book 1989 by Janet and Colin Bord as the source.

Giving "Heuvelmans 1962 p. 326" as the source, the British "skeptic" ufologist Peter Rogerson included in his catalogue of sighting reports of entities a narrative saying that in 1930, at night, at "Amazonas" (i.e. the Amazon region) in Brazil, a man in an exploration group was separated from his companions after following monkeys and settled in a tree for the night, 40 meters from a clearing.

He was disturbed by the noise of something approaching, and saw, by the starlight, an upright figure like a man. It was black and thick set and emitted a fearsome roar. The man shot at it several times, forcing it to retreat by dawn.

1930,

BRESIL, Urubu

A team of 10 people was in the jungle and one of them was separated from the others. As night fell, he climbed into a big tree. Suddenly he heard a loud cry, that cry seemed human. He heard someone approaching and loaded his rifle. In the dim light he saw at 40 yards a big black humanoid figure. It was grumbling! Our man fired on this creature who fled to the thickets, grunting and moaning, while the man in the tree fired again. At dawn he found blood in the broken copses and there was an acid stench. [Ref. pr1:] PETER ROGERSON:

1930. Night.

(AMAZONAS : BRAZIL)

A man on an exploration party became separated from his companions after following some monkeys and settled into a tree for the night, 40m from a clearing. He was disturbed by the noise of something approaching, and saw, by the starlight, an upright figure like a man. It was black and thick set and emitted a fearsome roar. Points to consider:

Bernard Heuvelmans (1916 - 2001), given as source by Peter Rogerson [pr1] was a Belgian-French scientist, explorer, researcher, and writer probably best known as a founding figure of cryptozoology. His 1958 book On the Track of Unknown Animals (originally published in French in 1955 as Sur la Piste des Bêtes Ignorées), and republished in 1962, is likely the source noted in [pr1].

There have been recurring observations in the Amazon of what was locally called Onça-Gancuçu, a "mysterious big cat". It is actually likely a jaguar, whose only particularity is to be black; which is obviously quite rare.

All this, of course, has nothing mysterious about it, and nothing to do with UFOs or their occupants. "Skeptical" ufologists sometimes double-play such stories: on the one hand, they blame "proponent" ufologists for taking them into account as if they were extraterrestrial encounters, on the other hand, they take it into account to argue that "imagination" and misinterpretations always existed. Here, I think the example falls flat in both directions.

I found no other ufology text claiming that this would be a UFO occupant sighting, or even mentioning the story, and I do not see any reason to believe that the witness imagined or invented anything.

Note that apparently, the witness does not say that the thing was humanoid in [pr1], he just said it was standing upright like a man, which may be the case of a jaguar leaning on a tree branch.

Left: A black jaguar.

In 1930, at the time of the report, in the rain forest of the Amazon, such black "big cat" was supposed to be only a local legend. The black jaguar is a half success of cryptozoology: it is not a legend, it is now proven to exist. But it is not a previously unknown species.
