ACUFO:

ACUFO is my comprehensive catalog of cases of encounters between aircraft and UFOs, whether they are “explained” or “unexplained”.

The ACUFO catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file.

Mexico, Missouri, USA, on August 19, 1947:

Case number:

ACUFO-1947-08-19-MEXICO-1

Summary:

The newspaper The Mexico Ledger, of Mexico, Missouri, USA, for August 22, 1947, reported on page 1 with the headline "Nobody Says They Were 'Flying Discs', But They Were Discs, and They Were Flying, Insist Local Aviators", that two local trained pilots flying just northwest of Mexico, Missouri, chased discs flying, about sunset on August 19, 1947.

The newspaper informed on the witnesses. First was Ralph Johnson who had been in a US Navy pilot during WWII, seeing extensive combat experience. Among other adventures was the time he sank an enemy sub off Miami by himself, bombing with depth charges.

Ralph Johnson and a handful of other torpedo bombers also attacked seven Japanese transports in the China sea with Japanese infantry primed to land and kill Americans, and defended with anti-aircraft gun. Johnson and the other sunk seven ships.

The newspaper explained that Johnson "knows first hand the difference between hysteria - which has caused some people to think they have seen flying discs - and accurate, realistic, proven observation."

The newspaper told of the other witness, John Reilly, was was "no beginner at trained observation, either", as he had been in the Army and has also done a lot of flying.

Johnson and Reilly were in Reilly's BT-13 plane when the sighting occurred, Johnson being in training. They were flying at about 9,000 feet. The newspaper quoted Johnson describing the incident:

"It was at sunset."

"We were flying at about 9,000 feet when Reilly, who was in the front cockpit, started shouting to me. I couldn't hear him and wondered what the heck he was talking about."

"Then I saw them. There were three disc-shaped objects flying in a northwesterly direction. They were at our altitude. While they reflected the red of the sun, I think they were actually gray in color."

"I couldn't tell much about their size. We turned toward them and tried to catch them."

"We were doing about 140 miles per hour... but they ran off and left us."

"They weren't flying in any kind of formation. They were sort of strung out but going too fast for us."

"I won't say they were 'flying discs' but they were disc-shaped and flying. We both saw them. They were not close enough to accurately estimate their size."

The same article appeared in the weekly edition of the newspaper published later, on August 28, 1947, while retaining the August 22, 1947 date "Tuesday"; this version was found by ufologist Loren Gross in 2001, and the case was consequently misdated in ufological sources as August 26, 1947.

Nobody Says They Were 'Flying Discs', But They Were Discs, and They Were Flying, Insist Local Aviators

They were flying near Mexico. Nobody says they were "flying discs," but the two trained pilots who chased them say they were discs flying. The time was about sunset, Tuesday. The place, just northwest of Mexico.

The people were Ralph Johnson and John Reilly who were flying at about 9,000 feet in a BT-13 at the time.

Ralph Johnson is a trained observer. He was a Navy pilot during the war. He saw extensive combat experience. Among other adventures was the time he sank an enemy sub off Miami-by himself, bombing with depth charges.

Incidentally, he was still in training when this incident occurred.

Then there was the time he and a handful of other torpedo bombers attacked seven Jap transports in the China sea. The transports were boiling with Jap infantry primed to land and kill Americans. And they were boiling with ack-ack, too. Ralph and his buddies attacked.

Final score: seven tubs sunk and that many more Jap troops who wouldn't be killing American boys in battle.

He knows first hand the difference between hysteria - which has caused some people to think they have seen flying discs - and accurate, realistic, proven observation.

John Reilly is no beginner at trained observation, either.

John was in the Army and, what's more, has done a lot of flying. It was his BT-13 he and Ralph were riding in when "it all happened."

Johnson tells it this way: "It was at sunset."

"We were flying at about 9,000 feet when Reilly, who was in the front cockpit, started shouting to me. I couldn't hear him and wondered what the heck he was talking about."

Saw Discs Flying

Ralph Johnson and John Reilly, two flyers of Mexico, say that on Tuesday evening about sunset as they were in their BT-13, flying about 9000 ft. they saw three disc-shaped objects flying in a northwestly direction, and were at about the same altitude as the flyers. They seemed to be grey in color. The flyers tried to catch them, but were outdistanced by the discs. Ralph Johnson was a Navy pilot during the war and had various experiences while in service. John Reilly was in the Army and has done a lot of flying.

1947 - Missouri

The Mexico, Missouri, Weekly Ledger for 28 August 1947, told of two pilots flying in a plane at 9000 feet at sunset just northwest of Mexico. Ralph Johnson, a former Navy combat pilot, and John Reilly, an Army veteran and seasoned flier, saw three disc-shaped objects flying in a northwesterly direction. They reflected the red of the setting sun, but appeared actually gray in color. The discs were at the same altitude and not in any type of formation. The pilots turned the plane to give chase. The plane was traveling at about 140 miles per hour, but the UFOs outdistanced it.

Aircraft information:

The witnesses' aircraft was a Vultee BT-13 "Valiant," an American basic training aircraft of World War II built for the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, a large number of them were decommissioned and sold to civilian pilots for a few hundred dollars apiece.

Discussion:

Carte.

I think it is unlikely that the two trained pilots, obviously aviation enthusiasts, would not have recognized jet planes.

But the report does not allow formally to exclude this possibility.

Evaluation:

Possible extraterrestrial craft or jet planes.
