Summary:

An article in the regional newspaper Le Quotidien de la Haute Loire of September 12, 1954, titled "Mysterious craft in the sky, near Yssingeaux", reported that a couple who drove in a car to go to Yssingeaux, during the recent storm that had struck the region, had witnessed "a most impressive meteorological phenomenon."

At approximately 7 p.m. as the storm rumbled violently between Montfaucon and Yssingeaux, they had seen in the sky "a fury, a brilliant meteor, shaped like a big cigar, moving eastward."

They had seen it for about 10 seconds, and were very impressed. Arriving at Yssingeaux, at the "Modern' Hotel", they stopped, the lady, very moved, needed a moment of rest.

[Ref. lqh1:] NEWSPAPER "LE QUOTIDIEN DE LA HAUTE-LOIRE":

MYSTERIOUS CRAFT IN THE SKY, NEAR YSSINGEAUX

Two travellers who were going to Yssingeaux by car, a gentleman and his wife, during the recent storm which fell down on the area, were witnesses of a most impressive weather phenomenon. It was 7 p.m. approximately. The storm thundered, with violence, between Montfaucon and Yssingeaux. At a certain time, they saw in the sky, a fury, a shining meteor, having the shape of a large cigar, moving towards the East. They noticed it during ten seconds. They were highly impressed by it, the woman especially. While arriving at Yssingeaux, at the Modern' Hotel, they stopped, the lady, very moved, needed a moment of rest...

Explanations:

Map.

A "sensationalist" article since the author seems to understand that it was a meteor while the title speaks of a "mysterious craft"; I also find a condescending tone, maybe exaggeration, in the insistence on the "need for rest" of the wife.

Had we been informed that the witnesses themselves had explained the thing as a meteor, it would be a proven "negative case", but this was not specified.
