November 3, 1954, Bénévent-l'Abbaye, Creuse:

Summary:

Listing earthquakes in Limousin since 1954, ufologist Robert Catinat reported in April 1976 that on November 3, 1954, there had been an earthquake not recorded by seismographs, and a gleam in the sky towards Bénévent in the Creuse department.

A catalog compiled from data of Jean Giraud and Jean Gérard Dohmen, in the ufology magazine INFO-OVNI, in 1975, indicates that on "H/03/../1954" (November 3, 1954?) at 10:00 p.m. in Bénevent "Les Coutures", Mr. and Mrs. Desert, during the earthquake that shook an area located in a circle of 70 km in diameter, from Eguzon to Limoges, from Bellac to Gueret, had seen a glow in the sky.

The sources would be newspapers of November 4 and 5, 1954.

The author of the catalog states that he does not claim to assume the nature of this phenomenon, which he recorded because some researchers claim that there are many "UFO" sightings at the time of earthquakes.

(L. D. L. N. "VUES NOUVELLES" APRIL 1976)

- This mention in this catalog does not pretend to assume the nature of this phenomenon. Some researchers trot [sic, "claim"] there are many "UFO" sightings during earthquakes.

[Ref. mju1:] MICHEL JEANTHEAU:

This ufologist indicates that in the newspaper La Marseillaise, of Chateauroux, dated Thursday, November 4, 1954, one reads the following sentence: "Mr. and Mrs. Desert, of Les Coutures, municipality of Bénévent, heard and felt the shaking. They say they saw a gleam in the sky at the same time."

Explanations:

Map.

It is now established that lights caused by piezoelectricity can occur before an earthquake. These are glimmers, absolutely not describable as flying machines in principle.

I found no trace of a 1954 earthquake as evoked here.

But there was one on November 25, 1958, felt in the Southwest and the Center, from the Pyrénées, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Agen, to Limoges and Clermont-Ferrand.

So I think an error was made in INFO-OVNI about the year. One can also note the curious date given to the case, the "../03/H/1954".

Updated to August 22, 2019:

So now I have Michel Jeantheau who confirms the year 1954 with another press source. So this must really have taken place in 1954; yet I still have found no record at all about the slightest earthquake in France in 1954.
