ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Lutterbach, on April 15, 1980:

Case number:

From the mid 2000's on, GEIPAN, a CNES service with the mission investigate the question of of observations of unidentified aerospace phenomena, published their documentation. It includes a gendarmerie report on a sighting in or around Lutterbach that occurred on April15, 1986.

The witness was a married man, father of two, manager of a C.C.A. deli shop, who told the officer that on that date at about 11:45 p.m., he was in his bedroom. The sky was very clear and totally cloudless.

He opened the "Velux" roof window for stargazing and possibly see a shooting star. After 5 minutes scanning the sky, he saw above him at an altitude he estimated as 200 to 300 meters, an elongated white greyish-black object, shaped like a huge and elongated delta wing, longer than wide, with a rounded top. He does not remember the shape of the other end, but think it might have been straight.

The thing did not change shape, and it produced no noise, no light, no shine, no smoke, no fire, no trail and no beams.

The sighting lasted 30 to 40 seconds during which the object moved in perfectly straight line at a speed that the witness could not assess but he thought it was very fast. The police noted separately that the object had disappeared behind the horizon.

The witness had given the direction the object came from and the direction the object was going to but that information - as well of course and normally like his name, address and information about the gendarmerie office that noted his testimony - were censored in the report.

In the afternoon of the next day, the man had telephoned to the airport, and had told what he had seen to weather man; who told him to make a statement to the nearest gendarmerie. He went to the gendarmerie office closest to his workplace.

Today 15 April 1986 at 07:35 p.m. in the office of our Brigade

We the undersigned [...] Gendarme, Judicial Police Officer

In regard to Articles 16 to 19 and 75 of the Code of Criminal Procedure

report the following actions we performed, acting in uniform and in conformity with the orders of our leaders.

M / 2 [Married, two children]

[...] Responsible C.C.A., phone [...], who states:

That night about 23 hours 45, I was in my bedroom. The sky was very clear and without clouds. There was no cloud. I opened the "VELUX" for stargazing and possibly see a shooting star.

I have been the sky for 5 minutes when I saw above me at a height I estimated in the order of 200 to 300 meters, an elongated white grayish-black shape. This object was shaped like a huge delta wing and very elongated. There was no noise, no light, no smoke, no apparition of fire trail. I saw this object for 30 to 40 seconds. It moved in a perfect straight line at a speed that I cannot evaluate, but rather quickly. It came from the direction of [...] going towards [...] that is, [...] to [...].

During its movement there was no light and no shape change during the period of observation.

This afternoon, I phoned the [...] airport. I got a person who takes care of weather to whom I explained what I had seen. This person told me to make a statement to the nearest gendarmerie. Working in [...] I therefore came to you.

To go back to the object I saw, it was a very elongated shape as I have said, the upper end was round, it was longer than wide. However I do not remember how the other end was. I think it was straight, but I'm not sure.

On 15 April 1986 at 7:55 p.m.

Having read the above statement, I persist and I have nothing to change, add or subtract to it.

I see nothing ordinary that could match the description well. This does not look like the moon, neither a helicopter, nor a plane, nor a balloon, nor a meteor etc.

GEIPAN rated this report "C", i.e. in their Glossary, "observation that cannot be analyzed due to lack of information".

I concur. I regret that quantitative details were not collected, such as the angle of displacement, the angular size. I also not something odd about the color of the object given in the gendarmerie report: I do not understand what a "white grayish-black" color is supposed to be.

The shape seems to have been clumsily described or noted down too. I understand that it was likely an elongated triangle, with a flat rear end, a rounded point or top, a shape going left to right looking a bit likethis, maybe even more elongated:

Unidentified, possible extraterrestrial craft, insufficient information.
