Ufology:

Party balloons, or why you must be careful before discounting balloons when a "UFO" is reported:

Everyone heard that some UFO reports, when investigated, are explained as "weather balloons". Weather balloons have various shapes - round, vertically elongated, triangular - and sizes, from meter wide to dozens of meters with the infamous Skyhook balloons or the less known and more recent MIR balloons of the CNES, the French space agengy.

However, even with weather balloons, there are exocitc variations, such as the mylar weather balloon shown here on the left, with its strange spikes.

What I want to show here, is that the shere shape or aspect and even, to a degree, the flight behaviour of a balloon, are ranging a very broad spectra. Most trained ufologist know about this, but not all newcomers are. Well, here's a few things you must be need to know about ballons before trying to start any field ufology. Meet the Party Balloons.

Above is a "classic": a raido-controlled, propelled, mini-blimp sold under the name ... "UFO". This rather inexpensive fun article can be used by anyone to create a stir in their neighborhood.

All trained ufologists know about it. Its not secret, it sells well over the Internet, which means, all over the world. It appeared around year 1999 if I remember correctly. The motors and remote control set can of course be used under models of different colors and shapes.

The main point is: when you get a reported "UFO manoeuvering around in the sky," you cannot say it can't be a balloon just because "balloons go with the wind in straight line", or "go up and never go up and down" and so on. You need to take the capabilities of this fun item mini-blimp into consideration.

Above: the same type of radio controlled blimp with a different decoration.

Below: the item for sale on the Internet.

And if you need a more alien looking UFO...

Above: Here it is, a fully coloured flying saucer of the science-fiction type.

Maybe you think this is a ridiculous 2 inches frisbee. No, it' a rather large mylar balloon with propeller and remote radio control. Seen in the sky from a distance, it may play the trick alright.

This means that if you get a report of a "perfect saucer" flying around in the sky, beware. Looks like it, but ain't necessary one of "them".
