UFOs in the daily Press:

The airship stories in the US Press:

This article was published in the daily newspaper The Herald, Ontonagon, Michigan, Saturday, April 17, 1897.

Warning: the airship stories must not be taken at face value as "UFO sightings." Evaluation of such stories is under way here.

The airship, which has been seen by the inhabitants of nearly every town in this state and Wisconsin during the past ten days, was sighted by Dr. Geo. McElveen on Wednesday morning [April 14, 1897], as he was taking an early walk. By the aid of a powerful telescope he made out the aerial monster as it was sailing in a southerly direction and could see the occupants, all of whom he recognized as former neighbors and residents of Ewen. No doubt, he says, but it is the delegation sent to Lansing to work for the county division bill.
