Pilot Who Saw Mystery Planes 'Mirage Victim'

PORTLAND, Ore., June 27 -- (INS) -- Experts were highly skeptical today over the report of Kenneth Arnold of Boise, Idaho, that he saw nine mirror-like "aircraft" swishing through the blue at 1,200 miles an hour near Mt. Rainier, Wash.

The skepticism was expressed openly in spite of scattered reports of roughly the same kind of things from other parts of the coountry.

Here are the verdicts on the flying busnessman's report:

Charles Steeves of the Civil Aeronautics administration: "It is very peculiar that Arnold was the only perso to see such a spectacular sight."

Elmer Finker, first assistant meteorologist in the Portland weather burea: "Maybe it was a moving mirage, the reflection of sun on the snowy mountain pikes."

Al Smith of Seattle, United Airlines pilot: "Probably the reflections of his own instrument panel"

Dr. J. Hugh Pruett, University of Oregon astronomer: "This man could have been the victim of "persistent vision," from reflections on the glass of his plane. such errors often develop, as when one looks two long at an acetylene torch."
