THE AERIAL MYSTERY

AIRSHIP NEAR CHRISTCHURCH ON WEDNESDAY.

(From our correspondent.)

CHRISTCHURCH, July 29.

A circumstantial account of an object observed in the sky yesterday afternoon was given to a Press reporter by a young man who with his mother, saw the object. The young man stated that about ten minutes after noon yesterday, whilst looking at a grass fire on the Port Hills, something caught his eye on the sky. It was cone-shaped, and looked like a balloon. He drew his mother's attention to it, and she expressed the opinion that it looked like an airship. The object seemed to recede in a southerly direction, and then to come north; ultimately it disappeared to the south-west. It was under observation for about five minutes. It gave the young man the impression that it was under control. The sky was clear at the time, and the object appeared to be higher than the hills.

FLYING OVER NORTH OTAGO.

OAMARU, July 30.

Yesterday morning Mr H. D. Bailey, a settler of Kauroo Hill, saw an airship speeding along at something like 30 miles an hour. After watching it for some time he ran in to obtain his glasses, but the airship had disappeared over the hills. The airship was also seen by several people at Maheno.
