NEAR SAULIEU

The Martian was nothing but a weeping willow, and its eyes, glowworms

The villagers fired!

The INCIDENT that occurred the other evening to the inhabitants of the little village of Montabon, a few kilometers from Saulieu, shows to what extent the flying saucer psychosis has frayed the nerves of certain people.

While bringing his oxen back to the stable, a farmer, whose name we will withhold out of charity, noticed at the side of the road a dark shape where two burning eyes gleamed mockingly at him.

"It's a Martian," the farmer immediately thought. And he rushed back to the village, where his story triggered the beginnings of a general mobilization. Rifle in hand, the farmers advanced, with Indian-like cunning, to the spot where the "Martian" was standing.

It was still there. Frozen in such a suspicious immobility that, without waiting for it to unleash a deadly ray, they shot it point-blank.

It was only a few moments later that they realized the interplanetary being was nothing other than an old weeping willow on which two lost glowworms had roughly suggested a pair of sparkling pupils.
