The Martian spoke... Russian

Our fellows from beyond the Vosges speak about the unusual encounter made in the area of Saint-Rémy (the Vosges) by a farmer of the place, named Ujvani [sic], Wednesday morning around 3 hours.

While he was going to his workplace by bicycle, Ujvani [sic] had to put foot at the ground on a portion of the way in the course of repair. At this time, a man left the darkness of a hedge. He held a revolver in the hand and talked to the cyclist in a language that the latter did not understand.

Remembering that he had acquired serious knowledge in Russian during his ten years of stay in the foreign Legion, Ujvani started to speaking in this language. The man then answered him in Russian, to ask him, always revolver in the hand, if he were in Spain... or Italy. After that the man aked about the distance which separated him from the German border. With an approximate answer, he moved towards a wird machine posed to the edge of the way. One would have said two enormous metal plates placed edge on edge and whose top, in the shape of cupola, was provided with a kind of periscope. The weird tourist went up in the apparatus, which took height, while making a noise which resembled that of a sewing machine...

Such is the statement that Ujvani made with the gendarmes of Raon-l'Etape.
