Chaumont, October 7. -- The road mender of Mertrud (Haute-Marne), Mr. André Narcy, 48 years old, was heading to work on his motorbike when, near Voillecomte around 7:15 a.m., he noticed, he said, an orange spot in a field. He approached what he first thought was a tarpaulin, and when he got within 100 meters, he discovered it was a spherical craft about 10 meters wide, with a porthole on its underside and a sort of fuselage.
Mr. Narcy, who became very frightened and threw himself to the ground, claims he also saw a small being about 1.2 meters tall near the craft. The "Martian" was either wearing a kind of cloak or was particularly hairy... Summoning some courage, the road mender stood up and called out to the "Martian."
But the being, after turning toward him, also appeared frightened. It rushed into the craft through the porthole, a sort of flame emerged from the bottom of the fuselage, a large "vaporous disturbance" occurred, and the saucer took off vertically, vanishing behind the clouds.
A little later, the road mender returned with two companions. They claimed that on a roughly 3-meter-square patch, the dew had vanished and the crushed grass had a milky tint. They also reportedly found twelve parallel prints spread out over a certain distance...
Messrs. Jean Caillaux and Gaston Deleait claim to have seen a strangely shaped craft flying at high altitude and high speed in Dordives (Seine-et-Marne).
