Johannesburg, South Africa, Nov 6. -- (UP) -- South African Air Force searchlights picked up a mysterious "cylindrical object" flying over the city of Johannesburg last night.
Thousands of persons reported seeing the object as searchlights at Dunbar air station near Johannesburg picked out the flying cylinder despite low clouds.
Dr. R. H. Stoz, Capetown astronomer, said the object "might well have been" the rocket which took the first Soviet satellite into space and has since been circling the world in its own orbit.
However, he was unable to explain how it was low enough to be picked out by searchlights.
