Venus showed up, but not the flying saucers

AVEBURY (England), September 20. — A group of telepathy enthusiasts gathered yesterday at the site of a Stone Age temple to attempt to make contact with flying saucers and the inhabitants of Venus.

The flying saucers did not appear, but a Venusian reportedly sent a message through a medium, saying that "Venusians will only come down to Earth once they are sure they will be welcomed by humans."

"Some of you," said the distant speaker, "would be frightened if we landed on Earth. However, we want to help you because we are afraid of the harm you might do to yourselves with your atomic research."

The group's members were disappointed by the absence of flying saucers, but one of them offered this explanation: "Some people brought their dogs. How do you expect our thoughts to travel through space with all that barking?"
