News and observation reports, February 2004:

Some of the UFO observations and ufology news in February 2004 are listed on this page. Please note that these are not studies, but second hand observation reports, although mostly obtained from reliable and well known sources.

LUMINOUS UFO FLOTILLA SEEN IN QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA:

On Thursday, February 26, 2004, at 4:30 a.m., Mrs. Nicole S. saw a formation of luminous UFOs over Toowoomba, Queensland state, Australia.

"There were large spots of light formed in a circle," Nicole reported, "Then the same formation in a circle but smaller. There was a large one and a smaller one just off to the side of it. All of the spots of light were spinning around in circles and, at the same time, they were darting across the sky."

"I was driving east along" Gorman Street "and the formation was southeast. As I was driving and watching it dart across the sky, it went out of sight across the top of my car. I then had to stop at a set of lights, proceeded through the set of lights and caught sight of it again. The formation had moved more south but was still in the east."

"I did think maybe it was lights coming from the uni (university--J.T.) in the area but thought at 4:30 a.m., probably not. I then had to turn off the street" onto Stenner Street "and I was driving east, which was when I lost sight. They were quite high in the sky and very large. From ground level they looked at least 15 feet (4.5 meters)" across. "Altitude roughly 800 to 1,000 feet (240 to 300 meters). The sky was overcast."

Toowoomba, Qlnd. is about 210 kilometers (126 miles) west of Brisbane. (Many thanks to John Hayes and Diane Harrison of the Australian UFO Research Network for this report.)

METEOR SEEN BY MANY ABOVE COLORADO, USA:

News channels report that many people in Colorado reported to have oberseved a set of greenish fireballs at about 06:30 P.M. over Colorado USA. The meteor's pieces have brightened the sky, came down very fast and exploded in the air. Nobody seemed to have reported the phenomenon as UFO.

UFO ACTIVITY RISES IN PANTANAL, BRAZIL:

There has been a sharp upsurge of UFO sightings, including daylight discs, in the Pantanal rain forest of Brazil's southwestern state of Mato Grosso do Sul. According to Brazilian ufologist Brunilda Barros, "Just over 100 cases have been catalogued by the Centro Brasileiro des Pesquisas de Discos Voadores or CBPDV (Translated: Brazilian Center for the Investigation of Flying Saucers --J.T.)."

"My cousin Maria Victoria and her family live in Tres Lagoas," Brunilda reported, "And she says Mato Grosso do Sul is an area of major UFO activity, specifically in the (state) capital, Campo Grande, and the Pantanal."

"The most recent UFO sightings were in Bela Vista and Corumba. Also, a number of motorists driving on the (Highway) BR-262 between Aquiduana and Miranda saw round luminous objects hovering above the palm trees. A silver disc was seen hovering in daylight over the Fazenda Bodoquena (farm), just off the highway."

"Daylight discs were also seen at the beginning of February (2004) in the southern part of the state (Mato Grosso do Sul--J.T.), especially by the people living between Nova Alvorada do Sul and Dourados. Other UFOs were sighted in Seminario, Sidrolandia and in Tres Lagoas, not far from the Fuerza Aerea Brasileira (Portuguese for Brazilian Air Force--J.T.) base that protects Campo Grande." (Muito obrigado a Brunilda Barros por esos casos.)

CIRCULAR BRIGHT OBJECT IN GEORGIA, USA:

BLACKSHEAR – On February 18, 2004, at 8:30 until 9 PM, I really didn't think much of my nephew saying he wanted to use the telescope until I went out and off to the northwest was a very bright circular object. It slowly moved to the north and all of a sudden, it took off like a rocket for about a half a second. It slowed and started moving south. It slowly moved south for a few seconds then it turned moving back towards the north again. At times it would appear to be hanging in the night sky swinging like a pendulum. It would go in all directions, like someone scribbling on a piece of paper. It also had faint blinking colors such as you would see with the stars. Occasionally, you could see what looked liked a tail from a comet. At 9:45 PM, I walked back outside and the object was nowhere in sight. Another thing I should point out is that my nephew said he has seen it for the last couple of days.

LOW COLOURED LIGHT IN NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA:

Many people from as far as Lightning Ridge, Gulgong, Oberon and Young in Western South Wales in Australia have reported a strong unusual light in the sky on February 17, 2004, just after 06:00 A.M. AEDT.

They described the light as a slow moving shooting star travelling west to east, very low on the horizon. It was very bright and of green color, prompting one witness to joke, "must have been one of those martians." Then it started to break up in parts and red pieces started to come out the back of it, then it disappeared.

John Smith from the CSIRO Radio Telescope at Parkes says the light was most likely a meteor burning lower in the atmosphere than normal.

I think it may also have been ordinary space junk.

GREEN LIGHT IN INDIANA, USA:

MAJENICA -- Two witnesses saw a craft traveling northbound over Indiana Highway 5, flying over the town. The car a little ways in front of me applied its brakes and may have seen it too. The witness states, "What I saw was a light green light fall from the sky in the north, slightly to the east on February 14, 2004, at 12:45 AM. At first I thought it must be a shooting/falling star, but it left no trail and looked nothing like any aircraft I have ever seen, and I have a decent knowledge of aeronautics. It fell from 75 degrees to 55 degrees, and then it disappeared just as it appeared. It looked almost as if it could be falling (if in fact it were) toward the Huntington Reservoir or the nearby airport. When we visited the reservoir seven minutes later there were about fifty geese in the spillway of the dam that were nervous and more vocal then normal. It was odd to see geese in the middle of the winter, since I have never seen geese there before. A pilot and another witness, also, saw something earlier that night."

LIGHTS IN THE SKY IN ARIZONA, USA:

TUCSON – The witness reports, "On February 14, 2004, I lay there enjoying my spa’s pulsating water on my back at 7:45 PM, and saw something that I have never seen before." "As I looked up into the southern sky and noticed about eight randomly spaced, light flashes that would flash on and off? They looked like miniature fireworks as they had bright centers and little flashes or beams that emanated from the center. The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show did have fireworks that weekend to celebrate 50 years, but unlike fireworks that usually have embers drifting down, these light flashes had no embers etc. At first I figured them to be planes, then helicopters as Davis Montham Air Force base is in that direction. There was no sound that I could hear. They flashed on, then off for about 20 seconds, then one by one blinked off and did not reappear for the time I was in my spa. Interesting I thought to myself."

LARGE NOCTURNAL LIGH IN POLAND:

77-year old Mrs. K J woke up late at night on February 13, 2004 and went to the lavatory and back to her bedroom, as she passed through the kitchen she was surprised to see a strong flame-orange light, which floated in the sky. She quickly realized that it couldn't be the moon. The light had the shape of a hemisphere, the upper part was rounded and its bottom was flat. The light was 2-3 times bigger than the full moon. The witness states that the light hung above the forest over Hajdowka hill, which was 1.5 km from her house. She watched for about 5 minutes and felt dizzy and then she went to bed. During the night she had a disturbing "dream" about a strange meeting with a huge shiny "thing". She awoke feeling very frightened around 06:30 A.M.

UFOS REPORTED IN SWEDEN:

KISTA - A strong bright light with yellow, blue and red colors was spotted on February 11, 2004, at 10 PM. The witness observed, The shape is different from craft to craft and some are round. They suddenly appear and just stop for two seconds then they go up higher in the air, and then they just fly away. The speed is ten times an airplane. First there were five, then they become 18. Two girls, 17-18 year old students had never seen a UFO before.

ISS CREW LOOSES SOMETHING IN SPACE AGAIN, MEDIA ADVERTISE:

Every 3 or 6 months, ISS crew member spot some debris in space, this time something which obviously seems to be a bit of scotch tape. Again, although ISS personal do not suggest a UFO but a small piece lost from the ISS, news agency headline on it as if it had anything to do with the UFO phenomenon.

GREEN STREAKING OBJECT IN OHIO, USA:

MANSFIELD -- The green object was streaking across the sky on February 10, 2004, at 5:15 AM. It was bright green like the light on a stop light that seemed to be below the clouds, parallel with the horizon. The witness states, "I thought it was a plane crashing, but no sound was made by the object that was like a streaking comet but, much closer." Duration was for three seconds.

Thanks to Peter Davenport, NUFORC, and George Filer, Filersfiles.

A meteor, probably, if it was not really under the clouds.

UFO LANDING WITH TRACES, U-K:

Ted Phillips, the scientist of the Center For Physical Trace Research which concentrates on UFO reports where physical traces are noted, informs of a case of February 10, 2004:

"02/10/04 - UK, Meanwood - Eight witnesses observed an object some 50 feet in diameter and 20 feet thick. It approached and landed in a quarry with no sound. An hour later a check of the area revealed three triangular depressions and damaged trees. The depressions were 25 feet apart and each was pushed 8 inches into the ground."

Many thanks to Ted Philipps.

Joe Trainor reports:

LEEDS -- On Tuesday, February 10, 2004, Raymond Mulhall, 17, spotted a UFO over Meanwood in the UK. "This sighting was witnessed by 8 people, two of whom were policemen. The object was about 50 feet (15 meters) across and 20 feet (6 meters) high. It moved across the sky without a single noise. It appeared to land in an area nicknamed the Witches Quarry." "An hour later," Ray reported, "I arrived at the Witches Quarry and found damaged trees and three triangular depressions in the ground. These were 25 feet (7.7 meters) apart and depressed into the ground to a depth of 8 inches (20 centimeters). There was a strange heat emanating from the ground that I found rather creepy, so I left and returned home."

UFORUM REPORTS ALL-TIME HIGH UFO SIGHTINGS IN CANADA FOR 2003:

Renowned Canadian ufologist Chris Rutkowski provides the 2003 Canadian UFO Survey News Release:

"News Advisory:

"Study Finds UFO Sightings in Canada at All-Time High

"February 9, 2004 - (Winnipeg, MB) The 2003 Canadian UFO Survey was released today by Ufology Research of Manitoba (UFOROM), an independent study group that analyses information about unidentified flying objects reported across Canada. Its findings include:"

"- There were 673 UFO sightings reported in Canada in 2003 - or nearly two each day."

"- There were about 39 per cent more UFO reports in 2003 than 2002. The number of UFO reports per year in Canada has increased almost 350 per cent since 1998."

"- In 2003, record numbers of UFOs were reported in British Columbia (304), Alberta (76), Ontario (150) and Quebec (49)."

"- In 2003, about 17 per cent of all UFO reports were unexplained. This percentage of unknowns falls to about seven per cent when only high-quality cases are considered."

"- Most UFO sightings have two witnesses."

"- The typical UFO sighting lasted approximately 10 minutes in 2003."

"UFOROM research director and study author Chris Rutkowski notes:"

""The most important findings of this study include the fact that the number of UFO sightings in Canada has increased over the past fifteen years, and 2003 saw an all-time record high number of sightings reported. People continue to report observing unusual objects in the sky, and some of these objects do not have obvious explanations."

"He also says that many witnesses are pilots, police and other individuals with reasonably good observing capabilities and good judgement. Although most reported UFOs are simply lights in the night sky, a significant number are objects with definite shapes observed within the witnesses' frame of reference."

"Rutkowski cautions: "Popular opinion to the contrary, there is yet to be any incontrovertible evidence that some UFO cases involve extraterrestrial contact. However, the continued reporting of UFOs by the public and the yearly increase in numbers of UFO reports suggests a need for further examination of the phenomenon by social, medical and/or physical scientists."

"The study was produced with the cooperation of researchers and investigators across Canada and with case data from private, public and government sources."

"The complete study is available online at:"

"For further information, contact:"

"Ufology Research of Manitoba, e-mail: rutkows@cc.umanitoba.ca"

"Media interviews are available with local contacts in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia."

UFO ADVERTISING IN GUADELOUPE:

The free newspaper "Flas Info" in Guadeloupe publishes on February 9 an article about a "strange flying blue cube" seen in the sky by residents, which puzzles "scientists and authorities" in waiting of the next appearance of the "phenomenon."

The trivial explanation is in the corner of a picture showing a part of some blue shape: this is an advertising; probably for some new brand of soap.

FLYING TRIANGLE IN NORTH CAROLINA, USA:

SHILOH - A criminal justice professional was coming home from work February 8, 2004, at 6:20 AM, and spotted a craft flying at tree top level. He reports, "As I crossed a little bridge on 343 the craft flared to the left and flew south along 343 steadily increasing speed until I lost sight of the craft." The underside of the craft was unusual with three conical shaped depressions that glowed a bluish color that turned to white as it picked up speed. The top of the flying triangle craft was jet black.

UFO, PLANET OR STAR SIGHTED IN U-K.:

BRISTOL -- On Sunday, February 8, 2004, just after midnight, Tim Lock was outdoors in the woods at Wraxall and Failand when "approaching from the northwest came a white light with a red tinge piloting above the trees, moving sharply about but hovering over the same area, as if it had lost something. It moved up, down, forward, backward, up, down, forward and so on. Tim says, "We, also, saw three smaller shooting-star objects shoot about under it from the left at about 15 minute intervals." Tim and his companions kept the strange object in view until 2 AM, until he fell asleep . "I filmed it on my camcorder, and my mother and girl friend, also, observed it. It was real white with a halo around it that was fuzzy."

ALIEN ENCOUNTER IN FLORIDA, USA:

ORLANDO -- It was about 8:45 PM, and I was cat-fishing at Lake Downy Park just east of downtown Orlando on February 6, 2004. I had a feeling something was watching me for about five minutes, I kept looking around me and saw nothing. It was very dark but the moon made things OK to see. I heard foot steps in the woods/marsh on the side of lake near the dock I was fishing from, when I saw and heard a ripple in water near the shore. Then I saw two stork like legs and a head watching me. It looked right at me and I was very scared and yelled, "Hey!" It stood up like a man my size or so, and stared me dead in eyes. I went to run off the dock, but when I did so, it walked at a slow pace toward the end of dock to trap me. I phoned 911 and they told me to stay put, and the police were coming. What I saw was not human and was not a native animal, but apparently, it didn't want to hurt me, because if it wanted to, it could have. Later, I called the FBI and they said they cant help. Since then I cant sleep, and see that face and I'm scared to even sleep. I'm 22 years old and never have seen anything like that in my life. For proof please call the Orange County Sheriff Department.

CIGAR SHAPED OBJECT REPORTED IN CALIFORNIA:

According to ufologist Daniel Wilson, "On Friday, February 6, 2004, at 6:36 p.m., a cigar-shaped UFO was reported at Solvang (population 5,332), approximately 260 miles (416 kilometers) south of Petaluma." "'It was quite a show,' said Mike Gose, manager of Petaluma's municipal airport. 'I'm going to get a lot of calls about this.'"

SIGHTING IN AVIGNON, FRANCE:

The Ipani web site (www.ipani.fr.st) received an observation report on February 6, 2004, for a sighting which occurred in Avignon on February 5, 2004, at 10:05 P.M.:

"Yesterday, were were wandering on the island of la Barthelasse, along the canal which faces Avignon, when one of my friends immediately drew our attention on a zigzaging object in the sky above Avignon. The object had a white color and emitted a strong light and seemed to change its shape. Sometimes it seemed round, sometimes, it seemed flattened, it flew above the Palais, and after some twenty seconds of observation, he suddenly disappeared vertically above the du Palais des Papes, in the mist."

FIGURES FOR UNEXPLAINED UFO REPORTS IN NORTHERN NORWAY:

Leif-Norman Solhaug, head of UFO Nord-Norge (UFO North-Norway) has indicated that there were 26 UFO reports which were unexplainable by trivial explanations in Northern Norway in 2002, but 13 only in 2003.

He added that there is a weak decline in the rest of the country too.

Among the sighting registered by UFO Nord-Norge are something which looked like a rocket observed in Finnmark, an object similar to a boomerang of the size of an Boeing 747 which was observed in Bodø, a sighting of two "stars" which rotated around each other and then disappeared at a high sped in the direction of the Big Dipper.

He suggested that the reason for the decline may be that people have become better at finding natural explanations, but he does not guarantee that the natural explanations are logical. He reminded that people find embarassing to go public with such observations, and that many of the observations reported are of a complicated nature and are difficult to explain.

Solhaug has just interviewed two people from Andøya tonight, who claimed they saw something they just could not explain Tuesday night as a lighted object flew over the sky, blinking in several different colors and making a horrid sound.

ALLEGEDLY, A PLANE CRASHED NEAR LAGOS, NIGERIA:

An alleged plane crash at Goshen Beach, Ajah, near Lekki, near Lagos in Nigeria has been publicized as "UFO incident" here and there, mainly because a responsible suggested that since there is no evidence that an airplane crashed, then it can be labelled "UFO," obviously and rightfully meaning by that only that it is not an identified object.

The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Air Minister, dismissed the claim on Tuesday, describing it as "a hoax." No relieable and consistent source of information seems at hand. For example, one newspaper said that "no laboratory test had been conducted on the oil found on the lagoon to determine whether there was really a plane crash." Other newspaper suggested ground radar are not working correctly, thus was the plane not detected on radar. Officials insist that the terminal approach radar, the communication and navigational facilities at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, were all in working order and in use at the time of the alleged crash, and confirm that nothing was followed on radar, no plane has been reported missing, although they admit that smugglers and drug dealers may not have properly recorded a flightplan.

There is seemingly only one visual witness of the alleged crash, a construction worker who was on the roof of a building, who revealed that he saw a big object drop into the water with an accompanying vibration and smoke. He said he saw a ship stopped briefly by the location and then moved away. So far, no ship has reported any such incident as is mandatory for it to do, says the government in Lagos. Another newspaper source stated with not much precision that the alleged crashing object was a plane, with red, yellow and white paintings.

BRIGHT LIGHT ON VIDEO, CANADA:

HOUSTON, BC—On February 4, 2004, Brian Vike investigated a sighting that took place west of town high above the Bulkley Valley. At 7:06 AM, the wife gave a call for her husband to come and have a look at a moon sized object. "It's circular, was very bright, and the top of the object was domed shaped. It was still dark outside and the object was seen moving in between a row of trees. It just dropped down slowly and "stopped"! She grabbed her video camera and started to shoot some film of the bright, shining object. She went outside to shoot but the object disappeared. Returning inside the object was again visible. Brian states, "Why the witness could not see it when she went outdoors is a mystery to me, there was nothing to block out this large orange glowing object. I could see clearly through the first set of trees to the second row. So why the light disappeared has me baffled. I was, also, given a copy of the tape to have it looked at."

Thanks to Brian Vike, Director HBCC UFO Research.

BLIMP IN NEW JERSEY, USA:

"I've noticed a number of reports about a glowing blue/white object in the vicinity of Kearney, Elizabeth, and the New Jersey Turnpike on February 4, 2004. You should be aware there's an advertising blimp-shaped balloon that appears to be tethered to a tower in the area. It's hard to pin point its exact location but it is visible for many miles because it is floating about the height of a 15-story building with no large structures to obstruct the view."

"I first spotted it while traveling south on the NJ Turnpike in the area of Exit 18 and could still see it when we left at Exit 13. I had my eye on it the whole time because it really had me going. It hovers, sways and turns with the breeze giving the appearance of something changing shape. It gives off a very bright, eerie, blue/white glow."

Thanks to Peter Davenport, NUFORC.

FIVE DISCS SPOTTED IN ARIZONA, USA:

SCOTTSDALE – A couple who are investors and own two companies witnessed five disk shaped ships enter the lower atmosphere at 11 PM, from the northeast and travel south on February 3, 2004. The witness writes, "Two ships were seen through my night vision scope, and this is how I know the shape of the ships. We could hear two ships as they flew by. They sounded as though they were pushing against the air. All ships were glowing red, blue and orange. The faster the ships accelerated the lights would pulsate more rapidly. All the ships were of equal size and shape. We estimate each ship was the size of a small airliner. Her background was as an advertisement executive and my background was director of operations in my industry."

Thanks to Peter Davenport, NUFORC, and George Filer, Filersfiles.

THREE DISKS IN AUSTRALIA:

MELBOURNE – The witness was walking home from the shopping center on February 2, 2004, at about 6:30PM, when he saw three white disks floating about three feet above an empty field. Each disk was about 30 meters in diameter and floating next to each other. At first, the witness thought they were some sort of water tank device. He states, "I approached and after I took the first couple of steps all three of them shot up into the air about 500 meters as fast as a sling shot and then in a neck snapping move, they jolted off at a 90 degree angle and were out of sight within a few seconds." "I study physics at UNI and I know that they must have broken the sound barrier or gotten close within four seconds from take off. The way they sped up from take off at about 200 mph and continued to speed up as they made a 90 degree turn from vertical to horizontal at an even higher speed, then sped up so fast that they were out of sight within a few seconds on a clear blue sky day was amazing. I have not slept since then. It was completely silent. I have never told anybody except my girlfriend and never will."

Thanks to Peter Davenport, NUFORC, and George Filer, Filersfiles.

ORANGE BALL IN SOUTH AFRICA:

CAPE TOWN – On February 2, 2004, an orange "ball" was seen hovering and moving short distances at high speed by three witnesses. It appeared to be dancing, flickering, and had one red navigation light, which appeared intermittently. The witness reports, "The moon was almost full and the object was clearly visible, but it was hard to know at what distance it was relative to my position." "My friend thought it could be a helicopter, but there was no sound and it was too high up. I just felt it was unnatural when I observed it. I can only say that it was not an aircraft, satellite, or anything that I have seen before. Perhaps there is a scientific explanation, but for me this is an "UFO"."

Thanks to Peter Davenport, NUFORC, and George Filer, Filersfiles.

BRIGHTLY LIGHT CYLINDER RAISES IN OREGON, USA:

TILLAMOOK -- The witness spotted a bright cylinder shaped light approximately 500 feet above the south end of Tillamook Bay at 7:30 PM, on February 2, 2004. He observed the bright light through binoculars and saw a fully illuminated cylinder that was rising slowly in a northwesterly direction. The cylinder entered a broken cloud cover and illuminated the clouds as it continued to rise and then disappeared after five minutes. Several minutes after the cylinder disappeared, jet fighter aircraft were heard above the Bay City area.

Thanks to Peter Davenport, NUFORC, and George Filer, Filersfiles.

FIVE SCATTERED BALL LIGHTS, CONNECTICUT, USA:

On February 1, 2004, two friends were driving in two cars following each other at 9 PM, when the girlfriend called on the cell phone to her boyfriend's car ahead. He said, "Look at all those strange lights on left that look like cell phone towers?" If you use the lights as a guide to the top of the tower they were all uneven and very bright. They were not blinking and they were hovering way lower than planes. I insisted they were towers, but he told me they weren't. Fifteen minutes later, he went back by the spot and the lights were gone. I decided to return a couple days later and I can confirm there were no towers in the area so there was nothing there that can produce those lights.

Thanks to Peter Davenport, NUFORC
