JANUARY 14, 1978, REDDING, CALIFORNIA, USA, JANE CHAPIN:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

In a chapter headlined "Copper Medic" in "Confrontation" in 1990, ufologist Jacques Vallée reports the many episodes allegedly experienced by the Clint and Jane Chapin couple, aged people living in a neat mobile home maintained in the vicinity of Redding in California where they apparently exploited a mine. The author reports on his impressions at the time of his visits to the couple, and various experiences that reported to him, comprising a UFO takeoff on October 30, 1969, another on December 27, 1976, strange nausea on October 13, 1977. We are told that the wife placed dynamite under a UFO landing spot in order to explode it "once and for all" if it returned and that then, scientists would "really get something to analyze."

Among all the series of alleged events, Jane Chapin told that on January 14, 1978, she saw an entity appearing at her bedside. she did not see its feet. She made a sketch of the entity for Jacques Vallée, showing a "flat head" with "large eyes, a large nose and an extended arm." She expressed fears of that this might harm her credibility.

Vallée tells his frustration with the couple statements, they had been apparently harasses too much by ufologists and the media, they took any questionning as expression of doubts and were not entirely co-operative, he describes the meanderings of analysis of some "sand" found on a UFO landing spot as well as a piece of metal; it is difficult to understand their evidential weight; but he states that he does believe the souple, that there is really a site where extraordinary phenomena occurred.

Vallée asked the Chapins what UFOs are in their opinion; she thinks that they are Russian or Chinese secret craft, he thinks that they come from the inside of the earth through holes in the poles as he heard during some TV show. Jane Chapin asked Vallée to promise not to reveal her vision of the entity at the bedside to other ufologists.

Vallée specifies that the Press had published a report but it was inaccurate and the Chapin were angry at that. Ufologists had talked about the case, in February 1978, whereas the Chapins did not wish for any publicity.

[Ref. dj1:] DONALD JOHNSON:

Donald Johnson indicates that on January 14, 1978, in Redding, California, a woman named Chapin woke up in the middle of the night to see a strange entity standing near her bed. He had a flat head, large eyes, and a big nose. He appeared to extend his arms over her.

The source is indicated as Jacques Vallee, Confrontations: A Scientist's Search for Alien Contact, p. 187.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates in his catalogue that in Redding, California, on January 14, 1978, at night, the witness woke up in the middle of the night to see a strange entity standing near her bed. It was described as having a flat head, large eyes, and a big nose; it appeared to extend its arms over her. No other information.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is "Jacques Vallee, Confrontation A scientist Search for Alien Contact."

Points to consider:

The reader should check out the book by Jacques Vallée for a larger pictures of the numerous episodes reported by the witnesses and the details arount that, as this file is only about the single CE3 report of the woman.

There are indications in it that should awake caution, such as when Vallée tells that the Chapins were so eager to be believed that they exagerated details of their stories.

Mentioned almost casually as an episode after a series series of alleged sightings of UFO landings during years, the case lacks the basic indications required to eliminate commonplace explanations. The single witness is 75-year-old, an advanced age, under medical treatment, we are not told whether she was awake or sleeping when she saw the entity, the entity is hardly described - it is difficult to understand for example what exactly a "punt head" ("flat head" in the French original text) is, as on a sketch a head is obviously alway flat.
