NOVEMBER 4, 1954, PONTAL, SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, JOSE ALVES:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Well-known Brazilian ufologist Olavo Fontes reported in a 1957 article a case he has probably picked up in the local or nation newspapers: in the night of November 4, 1954, a laborer named Jose Alves, resident of Pontal, Sao Paulo, was fishing in the Parde river, in a desterd place near the town. The night was dark and silent, and a slight breeze was blowing from the east.

Suddenly, he saw a strange craft glowing in the sky. It closed in quietly, the glow growing steadily in size. It was coming down from a westerly direction, and seemed to be "wobbling in mid-air" as it came down slowly toward the ground, very near the spot Alves was.

Alves froze where he was, getting the feeling he was in danger. He knew at once that the weird machine was unlike anything he had seen, and he wanted to run away but before he had a chance to run the "thing" was landing, so near he could have touched it if he had walked a few steps forward. It hovered about six feet above the ground, stopped in mid-air, motionless.

It looked like something made of silvery metal and shaped like "two washbowls placed on top of each other". It appeared to be about 10 to 15 feet in size.

Then, he saw three little men coming out of it. They were about 3 feet tall and had a dark brown skin. They were dressed in white clothes and had tightly fitting skull-caps on their heads. They left through what seemed to be a window at the side of the airship, and jumped to the ground.

Jose Alves was so terrified that he was feeling like paralyzed and felt he couldn't move. "DEVILS", he thought, "NO MAN LOOKS LIKE THAT". He felt dazed; his feet didn't seem to be touching the ground, but he knew they were, because finally he realized he was backing out, slowly dragging them backwards, while his eyes kept on the dwarfish figures.

The little men, however, didn't suspect that somebody watched them. They were busy. They collected samples of grass, herbs and leaves of trees; and one of them filled a shiny metal tube with water from the nearby river. Then, they jumped back into the machine, which took off vertically. As before no sound was heard as the eerie craft rose swiftly out of sight.

"When Jose Ales told us that fantastic story he was in a highly nervous state but not drunk, nor out of his mind", the residents of Pontal who had heard his report, told the press. It became apparent that he was a quiet man, living for his work and his family. He never had heard anything about flying saucers and even refused to discuss the possibility. When pressed for an opinion as to what he thought about the craft and its strange little men, he said "What it was I don't know, but I know I saw it. Everybody laughs at me but I saw what I saw."

On the night of November 4, [1954,] a fantastic "space-creature" story was told to the residents of Pontal, São Paulo, by a scared man - the witness - who seemed to be frightened beyond reason, on the verge of insanity. It is a disturbing tale about "three little men, about three feet tall and with dark-brown skin," who came out of "a silvery metallic machine, or craft, shaped like two washbowls placed on top of each other" - which had landed silently on a deserted place. At the moment, it is impossible to discuss this incident, but it will be done in the near future.

This sighting, of course, was not printed by newspapers in my country, at the time, because it was too "hot" and could scare the population.

Jose Alves froze where he was, getting the feeling he was in danger. He knew at once that the weird machine was unlike anything he had seen. And he wanted to run away.

Before he had a chance to run the "thing" was landing - so near he could have touched it if he had walked a few steps forward. They left through what seemed to be a window at the side of the airship, and jumped to the ground.

Terror struck Jose Alves, terror so paralyzing he felt he couldn't move. "DEVILS", he thought, "NO MAN LOOKS LIKE THAT". He felt dazed; his feet didn't seem to be touching the ground, but he knew they were, for finally he realized he was backing out, slowly dragging them backwards, while his eyes kept on the dwarfish figures.

And so ended another "space-creature story" few people would believe - except those who heard it first hand - a story that will be discounted and forgotten by all but the few who know better.

[Ref. lo1:] CORAL LORENZEN:

The author indicates that on November 4, 1954, Jose Alves of Pontal, Brazil, was fishing in the Pardo river in a deserted sector close to this city, in a completely quiet night with only a gentle breeze blowing from the east.

It resembled two bowls stuck together and had between 3 and 5 meters in diameter. Alves was much too frightened to run away.

Three small men, in white clothing with tight skull-caps, emerged from an opening similar to a window in the side of the small machine. Their skin seemed to be completely dark. Alves stood there struck with terror observing the small creatures gather samples of grass, herbs and leaves from the trees. One of them filled a brilliant metal tube with water from the river.

Then they entered again into their machine, which took off vertically as quickly and silently as it had come.

Residents of Pontal, who heard the story from Alves when he returned to the city, told the press that he was a quiet man and a hard worker who had never heard about the flying saucers, and that he was sure that these small men were some kind of "devils."

[Ref. lo3:] CORAL AND JIM LORENZEN:

The authors indicate that following a rash of occupants sightings in 1954 in South America, reports from local newspapers were dug out and appeared in national newspapers, one of them being the sighting by Jose Alves of Pontal, Brazil, on the night of November 4, 1954.

As Alves was fishing in Pardo river, a strange craft came down of the sky in his general direction. He described later the craft as looking like two washbowls stuck together and of a diameter of 10 feet.

He was too frightened to run and stood watching three little men clad in white clothing and close-fitting skull-caps emerge from a window-like opening in the side of the craft.

Their skin appeared to be dark but Alves could not look well at them because there was no light.

The small beings collected samples of grass, herbs and leaves of trees. One of them filled a shiny metal tube with river water.

Then they suddenly jumped back into the object; which took off vertically and swiftly.

Alves had never heard of flying saucers and was sure the little men were "devils". His friends and acquantances testified of his honesty and sobriety, believing his story.

The author indicates in his catalogue that on November 4, 1954 at night in Pontal, Brazil, Jose Alves was fishing in the Pardo River when he suddenly saw a craft approach with a wobbling motion and landing near him. Shaped like two washbowls placed together, it was about 4.5 m in diameter. Too terrified to move, the witness saw three little men, dressed in white, wearing tight-fitting skull caps, with dark skin, come out of the craft, gather vegetables and water and fly away.

The author indicates "Humanoids 33; Lor. I 44" as sources.

[Ref. jf1:] JEAN FERGUSON:

The author indicates that on November 4, 1954, close to Pontal in Brazil, José Alves was installed close to the Pardo river, fishing, when a luminous machine suddenly landed within a few feet of him, which he would describe as "One would have said two basins reversed one on the other. The diameter of the object was approximately 4.50 meters."

He noticed a kind of sliding door which opened to provide a passage to three humanoids in white suits with tight-fitting caps.

They gathered plants and took water then went up "on board their vehicle which left at once."

[Ref. rh1:] RICHARD HALL:

In a descriptive sample table of UFO occupants encounters, the author indicates that on November 4, 1954, in Pontal, Brazil, three small beings in white clothing with dark skin and "skull-caps" emerged from a UFO and gathered foliage and water. The UFO rose vertically with no sound. The indicated source is Charles Bowen's book page 92.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates that Olavo Fontes, in the Apro Bulletin for July 1957, reports an encounter in Pontal, Brazil, on November 4, 1954 at night.

Witness Jose Alves was fishing when he saw a luminous object come "wobbling" down from the sky. The object was 10 to 15 feet in diameter and looked like "2 washbowls joined together." It came down to hover 6 feet above the ground and only a few feet away from the witness. Three little men, 3 feet tall, with dark brown skins, wearing white clothes and skullcaps, jumped down and collected samples of the vegetation, and a specimen of the river water in a metal tube. Then they jumped back in, and the craft rose vertically.

Points to consider:

It is regrettable that the original reports that the Press probably provided are nowhere to been seen in the ufology literature.

A sensible comment was made by Dr. Fontes after his 1957 report on the case:

"In general I don't pay much attention to the reports that involved saucer crews. Most of these tales are clearly a lot of nonsense concocted up by hoaxers, screwballs and saucer cultists. Why have I included this one? For just one reason. Before 1954, there had been little similarity between any of the "space-creatures" stories so far published; they were such obvious fakes that they were not worth considering. Since that year, however, a disturbing resemblance between some of the new "saucer-crew tales" became apparent. This residue showing common characteristics still is not large enough, in my opinion, to be accepted as evidence. But these reports have cropped up year after year since that year. The report of Jose Alves is a good model of the kind."
