1910, VIOLETVILLE, MARYLAND, USA, LAWRENCE J. CRONE:

Brief summary of the event and follow-up:

Several decades after the sighting's date, ufologists Ted Bloecher and Thomas P. Deuley separately recorded the testimony of Lawrence J. Crone who was only 5, 6. or 4 to 7 years old - depending on the later versions - in the Summer of 1910 when he allegedly experienced a close encounter of the third kind one morning.

He told that in Violetville, now a Baltimore suburb, at a baseball field, he saw a blimp-shaped or cigar-shaped object, brown, of metallic appearance, approximately 100 feet in length or "twice the length of a railroad car", which hovered with an oscillating motion over a pine tree located 200 feet away from him.

The craft had a line of rectangular glass-looking windows of various colors, through one of these windows which was transparent, he saw occupants who looked at him or looked out.

They had heads and necks "like pigeons," with pointed heads or pointed helmets, no nose, no ears, a slit for a mouth, and two round spots or holes for eyes on their flat, chinless faces. They seemed covered with a soft-looking gray or light-colored gown, like fur.

Several groups of two or three of them came in turn to look at the outside from this window, it is estimated that they were about twenty overall.

He called the ship to the attention of two young men, who screamed and ran away. His mother came out and also saw the UFO, which moved away slowly.

Narratives:

[Ref. jc1:] JEROME CLARK:

Jerome Clark says 5-year-old Lawrence Crone was playing in a Baltimore baseball field one day in the spring of 1910, spotted a metallic, brown, blimplike object, over 100 feet long, hovering near a pine tree 200 feet away. Along its side was a row of variously colored rectangular windows. Only one was clear, and through that one he could see strange entities taking turns looking at him in groups of twos and threes. He thought there may have been as many as 20 of them.

From what he could observe of them, as only their heads and upper bodies were visible, they were conical in shape, with pointed heads; possibly the effect was caused by headgear, since the points varied in color from being to being.

They were dressed in light-colored garments with a furlike texture. Each of them had small hole for eyes and a straight line for a (presumed) mouth but no other features.

According to Crone, who related the story separately to Bloecher and Thomas P. Deuley decades later, two young men also saw the sight and were badly frightened.

Jerome clark says the source is HUMCAT) and that it was the sort of object that, had Crone's sighting been published at the time, would have been called an "airship."

[Ref. pr1:] PHILIP L. RIFE:

The author says that in 1910, three people observed a UFO hovering over a baseball field in Baltimore, Maryland. The object was cigar-shaped, brown, over 100 feet long and appeared metallic. It was some 200 feet away from the witnesses, it had a row of rectangular windows of various colors along his side.

One window was clear and the witness saw behind it odd creatures apparently taking turns peering out, apparently observing him, in groups of 2 or 3 at a time. The witnesses thought there must have been about 20 creatures in all.

The creatures wore fur-like clothing of light color, what looked like conical helmets, they had small round eyes and slit-like mouths.

[Ref. ar1:] ALBERT ROSALES:

Albert Rosales indicates that in Vidotville, Maryland, on Summer 1910, in the morning, Lawrence J. Crone, then aged 4-7, saw a blimp-like ship hovering lower than a tree 200 ft away, with an oscillating motion. It was about twice the length of a railroad car, and had windows of different colors of glass. Through the clear glass he could see entities watching him. They had heads and necks "like pigeons," with pointed heads, no nose or ears, and "2 spots for eyes." Their faces were flat, with no chin, and covered with a soft looking gray gown, like fur. He called the ship to the attention of 2 young men, who screamed and ran away. His mother came out and also saw the UFO, which moved away slowly.

Albert Rosales indicates that the source is Nicap and Humcat 1910-2.

The website says that in the Spring of 1910 at "10:00" in "Violetville, Maryland, USA", "An object was observed. Occupants of the craft were seen. One object was observed by one witness in a field (Crone)."

The source is indicated as "Webb, David, HUMCAT: Catalogue of Humanoid Reports".

[Ref. ud2:] "UFODNA" WEBSITE:

The website says that in the Summer of 1910 at 08:00 in Vidotville, Maryland, USA, "Lawrence J. Crone, then aged 4-7, saw a blimp-like ship hovering lower than a tree 200 ft away, with an oscillating motion. It was about twice the length of a railroad car, and had windows of different colors of glass. Through the clear glass he could see entities watching him. The source is a broken link.

[Ref. js1:] JEAN SIDER:

The author indicates that in summer of 1910, in Vidotville, Maryland, USA, Lawrance J. Crone was only 5 years old when he saw an object of metallic appearance in the shape of an airship, approximately 100 feet in length, which flew closely over a pine tree located 200 feet away. The craft had windows of various colors, through it, he saw occupants who looked at him.

They all the top of the body conical, a head which ended in a point, two holes at the place of the eyes. Their face was flat, chinless.

They wore clothes like fur.

The witness called for the attention of two young people, who were very frightened.

Jean Sider indicates his statement was recorded separately by Ted Bloecher and Thomas P. Deuley several decades later.

He says the source is Strange magazine #10, in 1992, in an article by Jerome Clark citing HUMCAT by Ted Bloecher.

[Ref. js2:] JEAN SIDER:

The author indicates that in 1910 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, three people observed an aerial object hovering above a baseball field of the city, and strange occupants on board.

The apparatus was in the shape of a cigar, brown, of 100 feet in length, of metallic appearance, in lift approximately 200 feet away from the observers.

The witnesses see on the side of the craft a line of rectangular windows of various colors, one of which is clear and behind it they see amazing creatures apparently looking out.

Several groups of two or three of them came in turn to look at the outside from this window, it is estimated that they were about twenty overall.

They wear clothing resembling light-colored fur, a kind of conical helmet, they are small, have round eyes and a slit as a mouth.

Jean Sider says the source is Rife, citing Strange magazine #10 on page 6.

He says that the case is to be connected with that in Vidotville in the same state and that it "may be that it is about the same incident", and also that it is almost identical to the case in Detroit, Michigan, in 1922.

Points to consider:

What a mess!

Violetville is a neighborhood in southwest Baltimore, Maryland and Baltimore County. There is no "Vidotville" at all there or elsewhere.

[ud1] managed to get the place name right, but unfortunately created a double entry [ud2] by copying Rosales' entry whithout checking. [js1] did not check either. At least he suspected the "Baltimore" and "Vidotville" cases may be the same.

Details about reported additional witnesses are changing from one version to the other, obviously primary sources should have these details right, and maybe more information on thecase.

The chances of a confusion is tiny here. However, this is a very late-reported case, with apparently only one witness interrogated, who may have been only 4 years old at the time of the alleged sighting.
