The Belgium flap:

On November 29, 1989, in the Eupen region:

At about 06:45 p.m. on the Mühlenweg path near Lontzen, two boys:

SOBEPS gives this information:

At approximately 06:45 p.m., T. S. and A. H., two 13-year-old boys who live in Lontzenbusch went to a sports training session in Lontzen.

They followed a very isolated path, the "Mühlenweg"; which goes down to a brook and then goes upwards again.

Just as they passed the brook, they saw in front of them at the West near the roof of a house above, the coming of "three very intense white light," which at that time formed a horizontal row.

Above these lights, they discerned a dark mass in the form of a flat disc, surmounted by a central "bump".

The thing approached silently and therefore could not be an airplane.

The object slowly descended into the valley remaining at a constant distance from the meadow, in parallel to the path.

At the bottom of the little valley, there was a tree located about 200 meters away from the boys, and near this tree the object made a right angle turn. The object then came straight at the boys, who panicked and went backwards on the path.

The object turned over the path almost at their vertical, and then moved upwards, remaining above the path, but it moved faster than at its arrival.

During the descent, the speed was that of a boy who runs and during the climb, it is about 80 km per hour.

Three to four seconds before the first turn, the middle light completely extinguished. In this turn, the row of lights was tilted at approximately 45 degrees and thereafter the central light became brighter than the other two.

The turn above the boys was very tight and the object accelerated immediately.

The boys were interviewed separately and said they heard, when the object, passed over them, a very slight noise, like that of a flying bee.

They then saw a triangular outline and also a set of 5 to 10 small white lights on the underside, which were unevenly distributed around a central red light that flashed without totally turning off.

When the object went away upwards, the boys did not see the central white light. This can be explained if it is assumed that it was in front of a triangle with a slightly raised tip and the red light was a little lower than the flat surface of the triangle.

Another report, in the Flying Saucer Review, indicates for this observation:

Again, still at about 1845, two young boys, Ture Schmidt and Adrian Hoffmann, both aged 13, were walking along a little sunken road at a place called Donnerkaul, between Lontzen and La Calamine, when they saw three white lights moving slowly and silently from SW to NE. The two boys saw a sort of "flat disc", with a slight "hump" on its top, shooting away to the right and inclined at an angle of 45 degrees. It flew around them, and they heard from it a very faint sound, like a sort of hissing. Then it moved away towards the SW at a speed of about 80 km.p.h. The white light which seemed to be located in its centre had gone out, and had then come on again, much more powerful. Beneath the object were a certain number of small lights (between five and ten of them) plus one red light!

There is a summary for this observation, published on the web by the Belgian ufologist Godelieve Van Overmeire in her catalog circa 1999, now gone, but much copied by UFO websites and forums. This summary is as follows:

1989, November 29

BELGIUM, Lontzen

At about 06:45 p.m. two 13 year old boys go to a sports training session. They live in Lontzenbusch. They follow the very isolated Mühlenweg which goes down to a brook and then back up. Just as they passed the brook, they saw before them arise in the west, near the a high roof of a house "three very intense white light." At that moment they form a horizontal row and above the lights they discern a dark mass in the shape of a flat disc surmounted by a central bump. This comes nearer silently. The object slowly descending into the valley remains at a constant distance from the meadow parallel to the path. At the bottom of the valley there is a small tree near which the object makes a right angle turn. The tree is located about 200 m from the boys and the object is now heading straight for them. They panic and go back on the path. The object turns over the path, almost at their vertical. It then moved up staying over the road but faster than at the arrival. During the descent speed is that of a running boy, during the climb the speed is 80 km / h. Three to four seconds before the first turn the light in the center is switched off completely. During the turn the row of lights is tilted at about 45E and after that, the central light became brighter than the other two. When the object passed over them the boys heard a slight noise, like that of a flying bee. They then saw a triangular shape and a set of 5 to 10 small white lights on the underside. They were unevenly distributed around the central red light that blinked without turning off completely. (VOB 1 - SOBEPS 1991, p. 33)

Localization:

Lontzen is about 10 km North from the center of Eupen.

The red line is the "Mühlenweg", "The Mill way" in English, North of Lontzen. The brook, "Lontzener Bach" is visible, with its crossing with the path (green arrow and picture on the bottom left.)

Notes:

This sighting report may be compared, for example, with a statement by police officer Robert Willems on his observation that day at 07:15 p.m.: "I was busy refueling at the fuel pump of the barracks [in Eupen], service car engine off. At this time, I hear Nicoll on the radio: 'Beware, it approaches the barracks.' The colleague and I look up and we see in the Southwest, a large object carrying a kind of big headlight with another red light below. I think it is the AWACS. But then again, there was no engine noise, it was completely silent [in the first version collected just after the sighting: a weak electric motor noise]. And then there were lots of lamps that lit and extinguished disorderly. It came from Baelen and it turned over the courtyard towards Lontzen."
