ALSACAT:

ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Bas-Rhin, on October 8, 2005:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2005-10-08-BASRHIN-1

Summary:

"Arnaud", from the department of Bas-Rhin, emailed to the ufology website of the GREPI group, Switzerland, that on October 8, 2005, at 8:50 p.m., he was in his garden when suddenly he decided with a friend, to observe the stars.

One of them was puzzled him because it was shining and blinking abnormally.

He immediately took his binocular for a better look and suddenly, he saw an oval shape. So, he used the zoom and then he told to himself that it was indeed a flying saucer, a UFO, something that could be alien.

The "saucer" was surrounded by a green light, with red dots inside.

It was moving very slowly. It was not a plane because a plane in flight is much faster, he said. He insisted he does not lie, and thanks for being believed, because he more and believed it himself, "to tell you frankly, I was shaking a little and I was stressed to see such a thing."

Discussion:

Let's immediately check out the "Venus hypothesis", aka "the queen of saucers" for many "skeptics", which is an exaggeration.

No luck, Venus was not visible in the sky of the Bas-Rhin at that time. The planet went below the horiton at 07:22 p.m..

We have Mars on an azimuth of 80° (to the east), and a low elevation of 13°, it may produce strange effects when viewed with faulty or low quality binoculars.

The problem is that I have never known of any example of Mars seen as oval through binoculars. I have never seen or heard described Mars as "surrounded by a green light, with red dots inside", either with the naked eye, not with binoculars or telescope.

The thing remains unidentified, but the lack of information is in the way: there is no duration, no direction, no angular size, no elevation, no angular displacement, no specific location etc.

Evaluation:

Unidentified, insufficient information.
