ALSACAT:

As its name suggests, ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Hochfelden, on January 19, 2003:

Case number:

ALSACAT-2003-01-19-HOCHFELDEN-1

Summary:

On a disappeared website called "Aenigma Project", there was apparently an anonymous report of an observation near Hochfelden in the Bas-Rhin, on January 19, 2003, at 05:15. p.m.

The witness said that an egg-shaped object passed in the sky at about 30 degrees above the horizon.

He had noticed it when it entered the right end of his field of vision, while he was driving to Hochfelden to advance to the toll which is 1.5 km away.

The object was following an heading appearing to him to be the same as his car's. Some trees were on the low side.

The object was "white - neon" colored and left a trail of the same color but slightly transparent, "like the drag of a mouse on a computer screen." He could not know if the object made a sound, because his car's windows were closed and the radio was on.

The object was lost from sight to the horizon, in the clouds.

He noted no effect, neither on him nor on the car, nor on the environment of the object.

The observation duration was 20 seconds.

The object passed fast in the sky at about 30 degrees above the horizon. I noticed it when it penetrated to the right end of my field of vision (I was driving) to advance to the toll which is 1.5 km away, and get lost at the horizon, in the clouds. Its heading was equivalent, as far as I can tell, to that of my car that I drove from Hochfelden towards the toll.

Some trees were on the low side.

The neon / white object left a trail of the same color but slightly transparent, like the drag of a mouse on a computer screen. I do not know if the object made a noise, my windows were closed and the radio was on.

I did not notice an effect either on me or on the car, or the environment of the object.

Discussion:

The description, with the shape, the trail, the color, and the duration, appear to be the description of a meteor.

View of the location, on the A4 highway 1.5 kilomètres before the toll after Hochfelden,
supposing the witness was driving West to East.

If he was driving East to West, the view would be similar, however he would have given
Mommenheim as landmark village.

Thw witness was at one of the two blue spots, driving to the toll 1.5 away, at the red spot.
