ALSACAT:

As its name suggests, ALSACAT is my comprehensive catalog of UFO sighting reports in Alsace, the region is the North-East of France, whether they are "explained" or "unexplained".

The ALSACAT catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file. A general index and thematic sub-catalogs give access to these Alsatian case files.

Case of Sierentz, on July 9, 1987:

Case number:

ALSACAT-1987-07-09-SIERENTZ-1

Summary:

On July 10, 1987, a man came to the gendarmerie to report his observation of the day before, July 9, 1987.

He reported that that evening he was watching television at home. At 11:55 p.m., after the series "The Invaders" on TF1, he went to the kitchen window to get some fresh air and smoke a last cigarette. The sky was slightly cloudy and he was starting to see the stars.

As he stared up at the sky, he noticed a flying object with an elongated, cigar-like, shape, and copper-red color. He could not assess the size or height of the craft.

He immediately thought of a "tracing bullet", or National Day fireworks.

The phenomenon passed just above him, took the direction of the northeast at a very high speed. He said he had never seen anything going so fast, silently and leaving no wake.

It only lasted a few seconds, like a shooting star, and it disappeared either behind a cloud or because it would have gone out, when it was far off the horizon.

At the same time, he saw two small planes, one that had just taken off and had flashing traffic lights. He thinks that the pilots of these two small planes must have seen the phenomenon.

The Gendarmes sought other witnesses, especially among the young people who stay in the streets until late at night, but found none. At the Basel-Mulhouse airport, there was nothing to report either, in particular, no pilot had reported anything. The gendarmes suggested that the witness had seen a July 14 rocket which he mistook for a UFO.

Later, the GEIPAN would specify that this happened in Sierentz, and would classify the observation as category "C", an "observation that can not be analyzed for lack of information".

Testimony about an unidentified flying object.

Witness:

WE UNDERSIGNED Gendarme XXXXXXXXXXXX REPORT THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS WE PERFORMED, ACTING IN UNIFORM AND IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE ORDERS OF OUR CHIEFS

To day eighteen July one thousand nine undred eighty seven, at half past eight, being on duty at our unit, we meet Mister [] of []. This person wishes to give a testimony about the appearance of an unidentified flying object he saw during the last night.

We hear:

[], unemployed, living [], [] street, born on [] at [], son of [] and [], divorced, of French nationality, who states:

+++ Last night I was home, I watched TV and at eleven fifty five o'clock, after the series "The invaders" on TF 1, I sat at the window of my kitchen in order to take some fresh air ans to smoke a last cigarette.

As I was staring at the sky I noticed a fling object of elongated shape looking like a cigar, of copper red color. I was unable to assess the size of the craft, nor could I assess its altitude.

Immediatly this made me think of a tracer bullet and to a 14 July firework.

The phenomenon occurred right above me, it took the direction of the the [sic] Northeast, at a very high speed. I had never seen an object go so fast, without noise and leaving no trail.

The fact lasted onlw a few seconds, as if it had been a shooting star, and it disappeared either behind a cloudor by going off as it was far away to the horizon.

Last night at the time of the facts the sky was slightly cloudy and I started to see the stars.

At the same time I saw two planes, one had just taken off from [] who had navigation lights in flasch [sic, flash], and the other that must have also come from [] and was taking the direction of []. I think that the pilots of these two smallplanes might have seen the phenomenon."

On July 10, 1987, at 8:55 a.m.,

Having read the administrative information and the above statement, I persist and have nothing to change or add or remove.

Following this testimony we tried to get other information with the residents of [].

During our investigations in the village we contcted the youth as most of them stay in the streets until late at night. We also contact the city services; no information is obtained allowing to confirm Mister []'s testimony.

For checking we contact the airport of [], Mister [], chief of the aerial traffic, received no information that day about the phenomenon. The pilots saw nothing, if they had they would have made the mandatory report.

In all this case, it appears that Mister [] must have mistaken a 14 July rocket for a UFO, or else other witnesses among the local population would have been found, and without doubt the pilots would have also seen the phenomenon.

ACTIONS TAKEN

- We informed by telephone our Company Commander, who recommended to us to follow the normal course of operation in such a case.

- By message we informed the Commander of the Group about the obtained testimony.

ATTACHMENT

- We established a map of the trajectory followed by the UFO and by the two planes. (Document Nr 2)

Discussion:

A "July 14 rocket" - July 14 is hthe National Day in France - seems mildly unlikely to me, since we are on July 9, and a fireworks would have been announced, with spectators - except for some isolated "test", but this is hardly done.

The description, especially the brevity, makes me rather think of a big shooting star or a small meteor. Be that as it may, there is hardly any strangeness in this affair, and the man has certainly been led to attach more importance to it than it would have deserved because he had just seen the series "The Invaders" - which tells of an extraterrestrial invasion - on television.

Evaluation:

Probable small meteor.
