ACUFO:

ACUFO is my comprehensive catalog of cases of encounters between aircraft and UFOs, whether they are “explained” or “unexplained”.

The ACUFO catalog is made of case files with a case number, summary, quantitative information (date, location, number of witnesses...), classifications, all sources mentioning the case with their references, a discussion of the case in order to evaluate its causes, and a history of the changes made to the file.

Case number:

ACUFO-1939-00-00-ROUVRES-1

Summary:

The Japanese ufology magazine UFO Researcher, of the ufology group “Sky People”, in their Volume 17, No. 1, of 2007, published the photo below, among other alleged UFO photos they said they found:

Scan.

The caption of this image told that it shows a formation of British Hawker “Hurricane” fighter planes during World War II, and “a vertical elliptical shape between the clouds”, and that the photo came from “The Showa Story of 100 Million People.”

I show below in this file that the photo was taken in France between 1939 and 1940, that it shows “Hurricanes” based at Rouvres, and that the “vertical elliptical shape” was only a fault or a stain on the print.

The source indicated by [urr1] is not a ufology source. “Showa History of 100 Million - people Complete History of Showa 1926-1989”, is a History book by Professor Takafusa Nakamura of the University of Tokyo, published by the University of Tokyo Press, Japan, on April 15, 1998. The work examines the events and historical forces that shaped the century and the effects they had on ordinary Japanese citizens, during the “Showa” era, ie.e the era of Japanese history corresponding to the reign of Emperor Showa from December 25, 1926, until his death on January 7, 1989.

It contains numerous photos, but I do not have the full book and certainly cannot confirm that a photo of Hurricane planes over France appeared it it.

The so-called vertical elliptical shape on the photo is a fault in the print of the photo, or a stain over the page it was printed on.

Indeed, another print of the photo exists, of better quality, and its shows no vertical elliptical shape there.

The photo was taken by Stanley Arthur Devon (1907–1995), Royal Air Force official photographer, it is titled “Royal Air Force in France, 1939-1940”, and its caption indicates it shows six Hurricane Mark I of No. 73 Squadron of the R.A.F, “based at Rouvres, France, flying in loose echelon formation”, with the date “between 1939 and 1940.”

The photo (below) is now (2024) in the public domain and is appearing on Wikimedia Commons at https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Royal_Air_Force_in_France,_1939-1940._C1291.jpg
