Summary:

In the ufology magazine Lumières Dans La Nuit #124 of April 1973, the ufologist Jean Tyrode reported an observation towards Mouthe from Chapelle-des-Bois in the Doubs, at the end of September 1954 around 09:00 p.m.

He noted that there were many testimonies: Mrs. E. Pagnier, Miss Y. David, Mr. Cordier, Mrs. J. Poux and several members of his family.

During the fall of 1954, the Poux family had decided to build a shed. It was done at that time, and one was putting the finishing touches to the work, one "raised the tiles," that is to say that each gave a "helping hand"; which ends with "watering the bouquet" (drking), a very popular ending. There were also young men and women who came to help, and to meet and dance a little, which made a crowd that night at the Poux house.

Around 09:00 p.m., a strong light appeared at the summit of the Risoux mount, on the side of Vallorbe, which attracted the attention of all those who were outside. Then immediately, a huge dull red ball appeared over the border and left above the valley.

The object had appeared very dull red to the first witnesses; which was perhaps due to the rays of the moon which illuminated it, because when the object passed in front of the witnesses, they could notice that it was a black globe, or at least very dark and not luminous. Its apparent diameter was that of a big moon, and behind the object, at the top and bottom, there was something like two tails, two short, slightly luminous trails.

The object crossed the sky quite quickly, like a low-flying airplane, without noise, it seemed to cross the Departmental Road 46 almost perpendicularly, passed over the woods to the northeast of the village and continued its trajectory in a straight line to get lost from sight at the horizon.

Reports:

[Ref. jte1:] JEAN TYRODE:

Ufologist Jean Tyrode reports about an observation in direction of Mouthe from Chapelle-des-Bois in the department of the Doubs, at the end of September 1954 at approximately 9 p.m.

He notes that there were many witnesses: Mrs. E Pagnier, Miss Y. David, Mr. Cordier, Mrs. J. Poux and several members of her family.

In the course of the autumn of 1954, the Poux family had decided the construction of a shack. "It was completed at this time, and they put the finishing touch, "raising the tiles." In the Haut-Doubs, this is an event of importance where everyone takes at heart to come to give "a hand" to the neighbor, and all this ends in "the watering of the bouquet," always a quite snuffed event. Young guys and girls also run to help, and especially to meet and dance a little. Thus, there was crowd that evening at the Poux house."

At about 21:00, a strong gleam appeared at the summit of the Risoux, on the side of Vallorbe, which attracted the eyes of all those who were outside. Then at once, an enormous dull red ball made itself seen above the border and went away above the valley.

The object had appeared red very dull to the first witnesses; in fact that was perhaps due to the moonbeams which lit it, because when the object passed face to them, everyone was able to notice that it was a black sphere, at least very dark and nonluminous. Its apparent diameter was that of the large moon, and behind the object, at its top and at its bottom, something like two tails were noticed, two short and slightly luminous trails.

The object crossed the sky rather quickly, like a plane at low altitude, without noise, seemed to go across Secondary Road 46 quite perpendicularly, passed above the wood at the north-east of the village and continued its trajectory in straight line, to be lost at the horizon.

Explanations:

Above, the places. The border with Switzerland is the yellow line going up and to the right. The blue line starting from Chapelle-des-Bois is the RD 46 road that the witnesses at Chapelle-des-Bois saw the object cross.

One could think of some military drill involving an airplane, but the flying object is said to have flown "noiselessly", and to have the apparent diameter of a big moon, making it unlikely that its engine would not be heard, even if there was music. The shape is given as that of a "globe".

However, the data here is not complete enough (angular displacement, angular velocity, angular elevation, ambient noise, sky lighting, etc.) to make it a "good case."

So, a plane is possible.
