Summary:

The regional newspaper Le Journal de Biarritz et de la Côte Basque of November 12, 1954, reported the statements of a shepherd from Laruns, Jules Claverie, who recounted that a flying saucer had landed near him at the Col de l’Aubisque.

The shepherd said that as he was climbing, on a sunny day, the last bends leading to the pass, driving his sheep ahead of him, he saw, about 40 meters away, in a fold of grassy ground, a craft on the ground, made of gray metal, in the shape of "two superimposed lampshades," measuring 3 to 4 meters across.

He was "struck" at the moment and did not move. He explained that, as he had often heard it said that "human-like figures would come out of the saucer’s dome."

But since nothing moved, he took several quick strides toward the craft and, suddenly, in a spinning motion accompanied by a dull and powerful noise, the flying saucer took off vertically, quickly gaining altitude, and shooting straight toward the pass, in the direction of the Hautes-Pyrénées.

He went to the spot where the saucer had landed, but found no trace, except for "a depression certainly due to the weight of the craft."

The Aubisque saucer

Continued from page ONE

"It was broad daylight and the sun was very bright; because of this I am convinced that I did not have a hallucination. About 40 meters from me, in a fold of grassy ground, a craft landed.

"It was made of gray metal and had the shape of two lampshades placed one on top of the other. It may have been between 3 and 4 meters wide. I was startled at the time and did not move, thinking, as I had often heard said, that human figures would come out of the dome of the saucer. But nothing moved.

"I then took several quick steps toward this craft and, suddenly, with a rotating movement accompanied by a dull, powerful noise, this saucer - for that is what it was! - flew up vertically, quickly gaining altitude and heading straight in the direction of the pass, toward the Hautes-Pyrénées. I went to the spot where the saucer had landed, but I found no traces, except a depression surely caused by the weight of the craft."

Explanations:

It is obviously impossible to know, as things stand, whether the shepherd had really experienced what he reported, or if he had made it all up.

In any case, I have found no other source so far, and no trace of any investigation whatsoever into this matter.

I can note that "Claverie" is a fairly common name in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, but I have not found any civil status information on a Jules Claverie in Laruns or elsewhere in this department.
